View Full Version : Access Card - Probably a stupid question

I’m a little new TiVo. About a month ago I brought a Hughes DS-DVR40 satellite DVR for my wife and I. We love it. We had an opportunity to get another Hughes DS-DVR40 from one of our friends (which we did), but he lost the access card that came with it. Being a little ignorant, I thought that I could use the active access card (an Access 4 card) from my Hughes SD-HBH box, which I was going to replace with the DVR. But, the DVR wants the old card before taking a new card. Is there a way around this so that it accepts my active Access 4 card?
If so, how do you go about it?
Thanks,
Gyro

You need to call DTV to change your card.

More specifically, an access card is "married" to whatever box it is first used in, and after that it can ONLY be used in that box.

Thats what they used to tell us but it was all untrue.
Cards can be remarried to a new receiver and DTV does it all the time.
I know this because when Samsung sends out replacement receivers they do not include new cards. You keep the old card and insert it into the new receiver. You then call DTV and gine them your new serial# and receiver id#.

I've swapped cards between receivers on several occasions due to receiver upgrades. As long as the original card was on your account you can swap it to a new receiver. If the card was from a different account then the DTV CSR will make you buy a new card.
