View Full Version : Tivo Won't Boot--can't Mount In Pc

Tivo hangs on almost there. I probably made an error editing rc.sysinit file. I used Joe so I don't think I had to chmod. SONY T-60.

Pulled drive and put in PC. Used JohnnyDeath CD (same one I used when I monted HDVR2).

I tried to mount the parition and got the message I must specify file type. Specifying file type give other messages. Command were right. There was a similar problem in a thread in 11/2003 that wasn't resolved.

Next step:

I mounted the cdrom and ran
bootpage -p /dev/hdc

Message was:

Device does not appear to be a Tivo drive
signature bytes 0X92 and 0X14 doesn't match expected byte values 0x14 and 0x92

When I booted the cd I just hit return to accept the defaults. I see there is an option for byte swap but I've never used it in the past and I'm not really sure what that does.

I'D RATHER NOT HAVE TO RE-IMAGE the drive and lose settings and recordings.

Search is a dead end.

Several searches later I came up with someone who had a similar problem and used a vmlnodma hdc=bswap command to the kernel. I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me if I'm in the right direction. My fear is doing something might cause irreperable damage.

First off, you won't "damage" your tivo, which is good. At worst, you may render it unbootable (which it seems like it already is), and you would have to restore.

Anyway, I'm confused on what you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to monte a new tivo, or do something else to it?

For anyone searching.
I made an error in rc.sysinit making it impossible to book T-60.
I was unable to mount partitions in PC using JD boot CD.

Solution:

1) vmlnodma hdc=bswap
2) I had to disconnect my primary HD (FAT32, XP PRO).

I was then able to use joe to solve the problem.

BUT I was previously able to use the same CD and HD with a series 2 HD without having to do either step.

I guess it's time to set up a small HD with WIN98 or Unix.

"I guess it's time to set up a small HD with WIN98 or Unix."

What would that do?
In other words, why would that help?

p.s. I'm confused about mounting the Tivo's partitions on my PC --
I was not able to mount them using generic Redhat 9,
nor could I mount them using the MFSTool boot floppy.
But I could mount them when booting from "Sleeper's ISO" CD.
Does that make sense?
I can imagine that Redhat would need some modification to recognize the tivo partitions, but why wouldn't the boot floppy work?

to mount your tivo to your
PC you Sleeper CD and boot up off
of that make sure you have your
TIVO drive Secondary Master
and the CD Master Secondary
and using this command.

mkdir /tivoroot
mount /dev/hdcX /tivoroot
vi /tivoroot/etc/rc.d/rc.syinit.author

* where the x is at either use 4 or 7 that
will mount you
