My Dad has DirectTV. I got him a Toshiba DVD/Tivo unit for Xmas, but now I'm thinking this Hughes unit would be better for him. I have a Toshiba unit and like it, but I don't have any experience with the DTivo. Anyone have an opinion on which would be best for him?

YOUR father... hmmm.. Let me think....

Based on what I know about him, my opinion is that a Hughes DTivo would be best for him.

OK, fair enough. Why?

I was hoping for an evaluation on the features of the two units.

He's definitely not going to hack it.

Can we just go in and pay cash for this bad boy or do we have to sign up for service @ CC then call Direct when we get home to get it live?

Only if you're lucky enough to get a clueless salesperson that will ring it up for you. They usually require credit cards for all DTV equipment purchases as insurance against the buyer hedging and not signing up for DTV within the 30-day window. The store doesn't receive a subsidy if you wait longer than 30 days to sub the receiver so they'll charge your card for the difference if that occurs.

If your Dad has DTV then there's no question that a DTivo would be the better choice, unless he also has to have a DVD player in the deal. A DTivo has dual tuners, Dolby Digital recording and playback capability, and direct digital recording for no degradation of the original sat feed. The monthly fees are also less for a DTivo.

Thanks for your input captain. I did not realize it could record dolby digital. I went to purchase and discovered that this would not be suitable for an xmas present, because it must be activated within 30 days or there is a $150 charge. Apparently it must be activated in addition to existing receivers (not replacing them).

From CC website:

PROGRAMMING COMMITMENT:

Within 30 days of purchase of your DIRECTV System equipment, you agree to activate any DIRECTV(R) TOTAL
CHOICE(R) programming package or a DIRECTV PARA TODOS(R) OPCION EXTRA ESPECIAL(R) programming package (valued at $33.99 per month or above), Phoenix TV, or Jadeworld programming package.
The programming package must be maintained for a period of twelve (12) consecutive months (without interruption)
for each DIRECTV System purchased by you, including additional DIRECTV Receivers ($4.99 per month per additional receiver as long as all receivers are connected to the same phone line). After you have fulfilled your twelve (12) month agreement to the required programming package, you are not obligated to continue your subscription of DIRECTV(R) programming for any specific duration. Existing DIRECTV customers may activate additional receivers with their existing DIRECTV(R) programming package.

No, you definatly do not need to commit to one year with all the additional receivers. Just to one year of Dtv, 1, 4, or 6 receivers it doesn't matter. Just as long as initially the receiver / direc tivo is activated on your Dtv account to avoid $150 charge back.
Also the monthly tivo fee $5 (by the way Dtv doesn't require this serivice either) per account with Dtv, is much less than SA tivo monthly fee.
Directivo's also have free basic features, I know all this personally, not from hearsay.

hope this helps Doug
