I am in the process of doing my first hack.

I backed up my original drive (80gb) to a 3.2gb FAT32 drive and now I am trying to restore the image to my new 80gb maxtor. When i go to restore it, it says there arent enough sectors on my new drive and tells me to disable somthing so it will fit.

I do and it still gives me an error that it doesnt fit and then it sends me to the main menu. I think the problem is that my new drive is not using all 80 of its GB. Can I boot from my Windows HD and use somthing to format the 80gb so it will show full size, then boot from ? If so, what program should i use, and when im done, can i go straight to restoring it to my new drive or will i have to go back to step 1 make another backup?

Thanks in advance

Your new 80 GB drive may actualy be smaller than your old drive. I ran into the same problem with two 40 GB drives.

if you make a backup with a -v option you can try using the -s 4 -v 4 restore options to shrink the restore by about 180 meg

that'll require some pdisk surgery afterwords to really fix though, and if the new 80 is more than 180 meg smaller you're completely out of luck

go with a 120 instead, they're cheap enough

Thx for the info guys.

I decided to swap out my PCs main HD (120GB) for my new 80GB. The 120gb should work in the tivo, even though i wont be able to use the exra 40GBs :(. Im in the process of tranfsering files right now, hopefully it will all work out.

I don't see why you couldn't use the full 120GBs, just restore using the -x switch.
