View Full Version : HDVR2, killhdinitrd, serial connection works but no info?

So I don't want to run a 4.0 image on my HDVR2, I just want to get ftp access to recordings. I figured I'd use killhdinitrd, patch tivoapp, install a bunch of tools and off I go.
According to this post (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=177172&postcount=11), I can run killhdinitrd on a 3.1.1c version, so I did.
DTiVo boots fine.
Now I also made an rc.sysinit.author to use a linksys USB200M. DTiVo boots fine, but no lights on the adapter.
I attach a serial cable to monitor the boot back in the computer room, i.e. no satellite cable is connected to the DTiVo.
If I hit enter , I get the "What is password?" prompt.
If I move the computer into the TV room, attach a satellite cable, boot the DTiVo, wait a while to hit enter, I get a few lines about loading the kernel from partition 6, checking it, valid, signed for release, then no more messages.
I go back to the computer room, check that rc.sysinit.author is still there, and executable, all good.
This post (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=167098&postcount=3) says to not hit anything until I get some output from the DTiVo on the serial connection. I can wait until the weekend, I get nothing in the Hyperterminal window. again, if I hit enter, I get "What is password?"
Am I just insane to think that I can killhdinitrd and install some extra stuff? If not, why do I get nothing useful from the serial? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's slightly more complicated than just running killhdinitrd, but not terribly so. Have you loaded AlphaWolf's Series 2 utilities package? Have you loaded the actual DRIVERS for the Linksys adapter? Several people, especially NutKase have posted discussions on doing exactly what you want. Perhaps a little more reading?

You have to pass dsscon=true console=2,115200 via bootpage to
make the console show up on the serial port. You also have to start
bash on the serial port if you want to access the bash shell... did you
do both of those?

Yes, PlainBill. Thank you, PlainBill. :)
I un-tarred AlphaWolf's all in one into var/hack/bin, and also copied over TiVoWebPlus. I call insmod from rc.sysinit.author on usbcore.o, ehci-hcd.o and ax8817x.o, but I didn't copy those .o files to the tivo drive...I just ass-umed they were there
As you say, more reading. And thank you for the NutKase tip. :)

'Course not, 'cause I'm a freakin' noob. ;) Thanks, Jack, I will investigate what you said, and do it when I understand it.
I appreciate your help. :)

Thank NutKase. He's put in a lot of work with this, and should get a little recognition. ;)

Thx, PB ;).
grins: Welcome to the board. Congrats for diving in and doing it yourself. I find your attitude/humor refreshing. :)
PlainBill and EvilJack are right on, in my opinion. It seems now that it's just a 'get the right network drivers' issue.
Let us know.

If only my daughter felt the same, NutKase ;)
I'm close. I found the USB 2.0 drivers, got 'em over, was able to telnet and ftp. Got TiVoWebPlus running, tserver, etc. I believe I just found the latest fix to indexing programs on an S2 box, which I'll install in a moment, and then I'll be golden....except (you knew it was coming ;) ) my ftp server on the TiVo is fubar. I use an ftp client on windows to connect to the TiVo, it says connected, gives no output for 30 seconds or so, and then says connection closed by remote host. At this point, the ftp client responds to all the typing I did while waiting for output from the tivo ftp server. I've tried re installing tivoftpd.mips on the tivo, no joy, so I'm back to pulling the driver whenever I need to install files...sux
Are there flash drive drivers for Linux? That'd be an easy way to transfer files...
Anyway, thanks so much for all of your efforts, and all of your encouragement. I feel like I'll have almost everything I want "real soon now" :D

FTP is the easiest way to transfer files. Have you tried FlashFXP or SmartFTP? I've heard some having problems with the XP ftp. I use FlashFXP and tivoftpd. Make sure to transfer in 'binary' mode. Works great.
As far as pulling the drive. Use your serial cable for now. You can transfer files with that in an emergency. I use TeraTerm.
You just navigate to the directory where you want to put the file, type rz, it'll say waiting to receive or something, then click File/Transfer/ZMODEM/Send.
Remember to chmod 755 the file after transfer. Also, it won't overwrite a file so delete the bad one first.

Not sure what you mean?
In the TyStudio thread (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24883), it was noted that the Windows TyStudio client would crash trying to index .ty files from S2 machines at the 49% mark. Long about page 5 in the printable/40 post thread, chrsturbo posted S2 binaries of tyserver and tyindex (to index the files on the TiVo, rather than on windows), but tyIndex would segfault on the S2 tivo reading the last block of the show. just this week chrsturbo posted a new binary of tyindex, which at least keeps running on my HDVR2, so I'm hopeful that means I have reached my goal of being able to get programs off my S2 DTivo and burn them to DVD without having to monte.
Have you tried FlashFXP or SmartFTP?
.....
I use TeraTerm.

I'm _shocked_ that the builtin windows tools are substandard. I've got teraterm installed, I just was using the builtin telnet. I'll commit to teraterm right now since it can do the file transfers for me!
Thanks again for all your work and encouragement, NutKase, PlainBill, EvilJack, and of course Those Who Came Before. My TiVo, which I thought was God-like before, is now so, so much better. :D
Next up...HDTivo!

I have the same problem as the guy above
I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything right ... insmod the 3 .o files
usbcore.o ehci-hcd.o and ax8817.0 .. looks like they are they in the
/lib/modules dir on the tivo disk and presumably match the kernel!
I did make sure the file in rc.d was executable!
It's an HR10-250
No lights on the Linsys USB200M, its known good. The system boots fine,
killhdinitrd looked like if it ran fine.
I can't find a bootlog file on the disk to see if it's loading the modules ... assuming they are the right ones! I guess it looks like there is a 3.5 mil jack marked serial ... is that the way to watch boot progress and try to fure out what's wrong.
I know it's got to be something obvious ... and hopefully not a bad USB chip in the Tivo!
Thanks guys

Hi Phil!
Use the bootpage command (search here in the newbie forum) to turn on boot logging to the serial port, that might help.
I also used someone's trick of just echoing messages to a log file in my rc.sysinit.author to see what was happening, i.e.
echo "About to start telnet" >> hackinit.log
tnlited 23 /bin/bash -login &
echo "Telnet started" >> hackinit.log
As long as your serial port is working, you can then view the boot sequence, and check contents of hackinit.log to see if it's stalling somewhere.
Good luck!
