A bit more information may enable us to help.

What type of Tivo do you have, software version, is it hacked, etc...

Generally, you don't "discover" what the IP address of your Tivo is, rather you set it yourself. If it's hacked, this is typically done via the rc.sysinit.author file in your /etc/rc.d directory.

tivo is a samsung SIR-S4040R
software version is 3.1.1c-01-2-381
it is not hacked

am I getting into something that is much to dificult to do if you have little to no software experience?

What do you want to do with the IP address when you find it?

Wait... do unhacked DTiVos even _have_ IPs? What have you done to add a NIC to it?

Can't even add a nic to it if it's unhacked, since it must be hacked to enable the USB ports in the first place, thus certainly no IP address.

No, a lot of the new standalone tivos can support a network adapter. I'm pretty sure the IP address is set in the tivo menu system.

Umm...We're talking about a DirecTV receiver running 3.1.1c in this thread, not a standalone...
