OK, I just replaced the 40GB drive in my Hughes DirecTivo with a 160GB drive. I cannot afford the CacheCard and needed 512MB RAM right now, but am thinking about it for the future. Can I install the necessary apps now so I am ready?

If so, which one(s)? I have skimmed thru threads and sites, but am unsure of what I need. In the future, I want to get a CacheCard and be able to set up recordings over the net and also do the "forbidden thing." I know you need to modify the Tivo so shows aren't encrypted before you can do the "forbidden thing," but without a CacheCard to put in now, is it possible to turn off encryption?

Yes, you can absolutely turn off encryption. You can also install the cachecard drivers at any time and then install the cachecard when you get it.

You can access the TiVo through the serial port if you're just going to run some scripts and add some hacks. Search for "serial bash" or "serial PPP" to get started. Once you get the cache card you can get full speed network access and extract all you want.
