I have a Hughes sdvr40 direct tivo. I plugged in and got the 3.1.1d update. It came with "c".
Ok I "dd" the c kernel to another drive and used killhdinitrd on it and "dd" back to the active "3" partition. Put it back in tivo and went well. Booted fine
I put the drive back in my computer and copied over my rc.sysinit.author and usb and lan drivers that I needed and chmod 777 them. I put it back in the tivo. It rebooted once then came up but no usb or lan.
I then put the drive back into the computer and find the files I copied over aren't there. So I copied them again and had the same result in the tivo. My copied files were gone again.
I just copied the rc.sysinit.author file over and done a reboot on my computer to confirm it is still there. It was still on the tivo drive so I copied over the drivers and rebooted once again to confirm their presence on the tivo drive. Well I couldn't confirm. When I tried to mount the tivo drive this time it didn't recognize the file system. I thought I saw an error during bootup. I scrolled up and found where it usually has the partition layout it had a bunch of crc errors instead.
I am currently running maxtor diagnostic on the drive now. I think I am just doing something wrong rather than a bad drive.
I have hacked my first unit a couple of times by hand not scripted. I am getting a handle on linux but I have a long way to go. Can someone please help me?
Tomorrow starts the free premium weekend and I would like to get this thing going. My other unit is about full. :D
Edit: Well it looks like I am wrong again. Maxtor reports bad drive. I got this drive out of the box. I sent in another bad 120 a while back and got this one. Well back to maxtor. I just hope the 160 I have on the floor is good. It has been there a while and probobly out of warranty.
Edit2: Looks like my day just got a little better. I put the 160 gig drive and did all the same to it I got the adapter to work but I couldn't connect to the tivo through the network. I thought maybe a couple of sleep commands in the during the driver install might fix it. I put it back in my computer and bios doesn't recognize it as a maxtor anymore just a long string of characters. mfs tools doesn't show the partitions anymore just crc errors. Maxtor tools shows buffer error right off. First time I have used the drive. I think it only has a 1 year warranty and I have had it in the box for the last year. Looks like it is time to look at seagate.
If anyone makes it this far I have a question. When I unplug my lan from the tivo it reboots is this normal? I haven't done it before but I haven't bought another connector yet so I figured I would test with the one I have and buy another just like it.
