View Full Version : TERM and serial console

Does anyone know what type of TERM to use for the serial
console to get a ncurses app ( nano ( uses terminfo ) )
to work correctly?

If I telnet in to my S2 tivo, and run my copy of nano, the
screen works fine. If I'm using the serial console, the screen
is partially scrambled when I use nano. The stuff that is
supposed to be at the bottom is put at the top and as you
page down, it scrambles the file on the screen.

I'd like to be able to use nano over the serial console.

Any info would be appreciated.

The TERM stuff magically works with telnet because your TERM should be sent in the telnet negotiation. I'd try vt100, it's usually a good "lowest common denominator" type of terminal definition.

The terminal emulator you are using to connect to the serial port determines what you should set TERM to. You can try out various terminal definitions by running your editor with the environment variable prepended, like so:

TERM=vt100 nano foo.txt
TERM=xterm nano foo.txt

Good luck sorting it out. I haven't had problems with vi on my serial console. I'm using screen as the terminal emulator, I don't know what TERM is by default b/c it Just Worked.

If vt100 doesn't work try ansi or linux.
