Dump is the right word for it.
I don't consider these Seagate Barracuda 7 drives good for Tivos. Between Maxtor, Western Digital, and Seagate the Seagates are the loudest drives.
The Barracuda 7 has no support for acoustic management.
I promptly removed this drive from my Tivo and stuck it in a PC where it wouldn't be noticed (lack of constant activity).
We should start a thread somewhere listing good and bad drives. Did you know that the RCA DVR80 comes with a Western Digital drive WD800? Based on heat and noise, I've actually concluded WD drives are the best choice right now. (I've got a Maxtor 200 gig that runs twice as hot as the WD 160 gig, I've also decided not to keep that in a Tivo unit).

Seagate claims "quietest in industry" at 2.5 bels. I have one in my tivo and all i hear are muffled clicks. Cant hear it over my frig or tv.

Yeh, right... their exact words are:
Idle acoustics of 2.5 bels- the industry's best
When is a tivo ever idle? I'd like to see a measurement of seek noise... I'll bet this one gets one of the loudest ratings.

There might be other models of Seagates that aren't as bad. Just like other brands have good models and bad models.
Bottom line: stay away from this one if you want a quiet tivo.
i see $49.99
I swear it said $79 when I checked. I must be losing it.

Seagate is the only one with FIVE YEAR WARRANTY!
They must think they are doing something right.
If they are all roughly the same price, why not suck up on 5 years?

about a month ago i purchased one of the 7200.7 barracuda's from best buy. 120gb, i think it has 8mb cache too, but i don't remember.
its damn quiet, quieter than the WD 40GB that was in my S4040R before.
i have to try really hard to hear the access noises. the fan in the back of the unit is louder. and _any_ other noise in my house drowns the tivo out. (it is in my bedroom, so quiet is definitely needed)

I also have a Seagate and it is very quiet. I have a wd 40gig and that is louder

I bought Seagate HDD earlier this year because of their rebate deal.
No complains so far. Must resist myself from buying them again this year.

I bought the 160 gig Seagate and it is very quiet to me. And the 5 year warranty is icing on the cake.
