extract stream and directivo

i think i already know the answer, but im going to ask anyway:D
can i use extract strem on my directivo or is am i not going to be able to use what i extract because its ecoded in directv bitstream format??? instead of mpeg2.. this has been on my mind for a few weeks now, so someone settle this for me PLEASE ;)

I have seen messages indicating that very bad things happen to those who try, (i.e. that DTivo will override chattr and remove everything they have written.)

But I don't buy that the data is stored in an encrypted format. I can pull my access card and still have full access to recorded shows. I do get a 'please insert your card' at the bottom of the screen. I don't have any PPV shows on the machine to check, maybe those are...

I think the the variable rate encoding may be messing up extract stream because it is not adjusting rate. (I flat out don't know, I have never looked at code.)
