this is a lba48 boot cd with the basic utils needed to backup, restore and modify your tivo's software. it's designed to work with the standardized (soon to be further explained) nsts-framework for installing software packages

most importantly that iso includes kernels pre-modified with killhdinitrd, which is required to prevent the tivo prom verification system from erasing any changes to the tivo hard disk



*if you don't have a good backup, here's where to get a nice clean S2SA image (http://partners.ptvupgrade.com/z/40/CD20/) - get the TCD240080 image if you're using the 4.x+RID package

*TCD240080 is a smaller download but requires an 80 gig or larger hard drive, get TCD240040 if you only have a factory 40

the purpose of the nsts-framework is to make installations as easy as possible. it's not emerge, but it's a start

here's how it works:

download an nsts-framework compatable installer package to your pc. decompress & save it to one of these four locations

c:\nsts - where c is a fat32 drive on the master position of the primary ide controller

floppy disk

burn it to the \nsts folder on a cdrom

/nsts on a /dev/hda1 linux partition


connect your tivo drive to the pc's secondary ide controller (as is standard procedure) and boot from the iso

type "cdrom", "cdrive", "floppy" or "ldrive" as apropriate


the iso mounts the device and runs any executable file found with the .nst extension.

use 000_whatever.nst, 001_whatever.nst, 002_whatever.nst naming to run multiple installers sequentially


this should allows non-*nix folks to get started more easily.

it's up to individual developers to ensure that their installer does apropriate sanity checking & such

this can also be used to launch certain types of utilities like automated backup, extraction, repair, etc.

there is a whole raft unexplored possibilities involving plugging a tivo drive into a pc
