hi i have a tivo sa 2 and i want to be able to use it on the pansat.
so far i was able to upgrade the 40 gig into a 160 gig without probel with the msftool from hinsdale page...
my i'm trying to put killhdinitrd on it but how do i do it. i read this thread over and over and i dont get it ...
http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37965
i'm stuck at the part " To start with, I mentioned that Knoppix can't read the partition table from the Tivo drive. I used pdisk to get offset/sizes, dd'ed them to files on my machine, mounted/modified them as needed, then dd'ed them back. The steps I took were:
./pdisk --list /dev/hda "
what does he mean by dd'd? and where do i place the file pdisk?? if dont know feel like typing a solution jus tell me the keyword to look up.
ps i also read the killhd support thread but the instrucktion given a the start of the page was too complex for me.
please help tia

Keep looking. The procedure you referenced fails to take advantage of most of the tools available.
A couple of threads that might help you are 'image won't take' and 'Project 2', both started by Linda.

Well, bravo for doing it the smart way as opposed to Sleeper's. Hopefully we can help you out, since you're at least trying to do it the right way.

I think you're laboring under a misconception about what killhdinitrd is. Basically, killhdinitrd is a one-time use utility that 'blows out' your initrd, essentially killing the security mechanism that Tivo tries to use to prevent you from having hacks in your system. I'm concerned because "put killhdinitrd on it' sounds like you think its a program that will be run regularly on the tivo.

Again, you're handling this well: dd refers to essentially a complex form of copying files over. For example, after you've run killhdinitrd on a virgin 3.1.1c kernal, you're going to be dd'ing it into your active tivo partition (over the existing kernal). If you'd like to understand that more, you could probably start with a google of "dd kernal" or "dd linux". Do a similar search for pdisk, although you may also want to look for "path" and "linux", and something to the effect of "running programs in linux".

The kindest response is this: Sorry, but re-read it. The instructions in the killhinitrd are a bit complex, but they're as simplistic as any part of tivo hacking is going to get. Sure, a few things are just copying over and running a script, but in general you've got to have a basic conception of Linux, and thats all that is required for using killhdinitrd. Normally I'd link you to the newbie guide index, but I'm not logged in from my usual system so I don't have the link handy. However, if you search on the form for "newbie guide index", you'll find it. Included is a newbie guide of tivo terms I believe. Also, you can probably do a search for posts of mine, since I've tried to explain those concepts before (just as most members that are charter or older have...).
Good luck.
