what software do i need to do this ? its their latest model dont know exactly which one but they said the "tivo function was built in".

That URL gives a very nice walk through, one that details how to upgrade your DirecTV TiVo's hard drive to a larger one. It's got a link to the downloadable MFStools2 ISO (from which you can create the needed boot CD) and step by step instructions on what to do.

BTW, I'm guessing that the TiVo you'll receive (if you're getting it from DirecTV) will be a Huges 35 hour SD-DVR40.
