I was working on my dad's tivo last week and after an edit to rc.sysinit.author it won't boot. I have tried everything and no luck. I dropped a 200 gig disk into the tivo and restored an image to it. Now my main question is I have his two drives A & B sitting on my desk. Is there any way I can hook those drives up to a linux box and pull the recordings off the drives and ftp them back into the working tivo?

does anyone have a clue on how to extract the recordings off a non-bootable tivo?

Are you sure the drive is dead? have you made sure rc.sysinit is Executable

chmod 755 rc.sysinit

and

chmod 755 rc.sysinit.author

Since the rc.sysinit.author was the file you edited. Have you tried renaming it so tivo doesnt try to execute it on boot? Where does the tivo hang?

There is a whole thread on extraction: here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23192)
