I can't seem to find the thread now, but did I understand someone correctly in that an InstantCake restore keeps the s/n intact and doesn't require a CDE? If so, how can this be?
Thanks,
Doc

Doc, for the serial number, it is never changed with a image restore as it is stored on the crypto chip.
As for not requiring a CDE, I would image that they use 51killer on the unit upon the first boot. I made a similar script to run on my images using the two attached files.

Ok, I'm confused now. I know that the s/n is stored in hardware, but I was under the impression that it was also stored in software, so they could be bounced against each other. I thought this was the reason for the "Severe error" message after restoring an image from another unit, and the need for CDE.
If this is not the case, can you enlighten me?
Thanks!

Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks,

What compwiz said...
Use mfs_ls to see if there is a DC key in /State/Media before the first boot. If not, that's how it was done. If it's there, see if the zaprequest is set (grep the startup scripts - it's the attribute that causes C&D).

So if I create an image to give to my friends, and delete DC Key from /State/Media, it won't require the CDE to get past that severe hardware error message (i.e. won't generate this error)?
Thanks again,
Doc
