TY files are the exact file your Tivo is playing. The Quality doesnt change, there is no rencoding, or anything.. What you see on your tivo, is what you get.
So, just like on the Tivo the quality depends on the Tivo you are coming from, and what the settings are.
TY file from a Dtivo - Great, and AC Audio!
TY File from SA at Best quality - Good.
TY file from SA at worst quality - pretty Mediocre. Esp if the scene has snow or rain.
If you still need a small TY file, I can put together a 10 second clip for ya. Just choose either Dtivo, or SA Worst Quality. I dont have any SA Bests

Again, using TyTools, for example, to convert from .ty->.mpg, there is no re-encoding that occurs (except at FAE points), it simply strips out the unecessary data to make the .ty file mpg compliant. WYSIWYG.

There really isn't a "conversion" to MPEG. .ty files are allready MPEG2, they just have a bunch of extra stuff we don't need. TyTool just removes all that (simplistic explination, it does a LOT of work, but doesn't re-encode, except at FAE cut points, but that's a given). There is *NO* re-encoding, so there is *NO* quality loss. Even the re-encode at the FAE cut points is unoticable to me. It's only re-encoding 1 GOP, so it's really fast and you can't even tell it's there. You can choose not to use FAE if you want to as well. Then it does GOP cutting, no re-encodes at all.
The DVDs I made from my DTivo files with TyTool look EXACTLY the same as when I play them from my DTivo. Which is really the point of extraction in the first place. No re-encodes or the quality loss and time required to do them.
