I know you could get in trouble from buying a hacked DTIVO off of ebay, but what about selling the ones you don’t want anymore? I wanted to sell two of my receivers in order to fund the purchase of my HDTIVO and really wanted to be able to get the full “value” of it rather than putting it back to factory settings and getting $75 for it. If it is wrong or illegal to do so, then I won’t, but I wanted to check first.

Thanks,

depends on what you include

read the license for everything, decide what's legal / ethical

THEN consider what might be legal but will piss off the folks that developed it

I don't think most have an issue with an individual trying to get rid of their old equipment. The rules were made to keep people from churning hacked tivos at a premium, but they had to encompass everyone to be effective.

Look at the licenses for all of the software you applied to your Tivo and see. For example, I believe Riley prohibits distribution of mfs_ftp (not sure, but I am sure the license file will say so.)

You will have to do some checking...

Edit: I see Riley posted while I was typing.... I change my answer to "what he said..."

Okay, maybe I will just remove the mfs-ftp. What about the HMO features. Is that considered illegal since DTV doesn't offer it....am I opening myself up to any legal issues.

thanks again

Tony, with all due respect, when a NEW 80 hour Dtivo can be had for $99, a used one loses all appeal. Any decent value on it comes from the hacks applied or larger hard drive. Why not just put it back the way it came and Ebay it? If you used the 4.x on RID, you're unable to sell a system with that software loaded at all.

yep, superpatch requires "circumventing an encryption device" which is federal under the DMCA
