I'm looking to get a new tivo and would like guidance on what box to buy. I have direct tv and from what i have read here any box would work (correct me if i'm wrong). I know I would like a series 2 for the networking feature. Hacking isn't a big issue but may tinker with it in the future. I would like to be able to transfer over the network video to my computer to burn on dvd, but i'm unclear if that can be done. I've read that you can transfer from the tivo via disk to disk but i'd prefer to use the network. Also because we have direct tv do we have to pay them a fee in order to use tivo or is it just the standard subscription from tivo.
Many thanks for the replies and great forum,
YZ

Read, read, and read some more.
Avoid the R10 for the time being. It's not readily hackable at this time. The other Series 2 DirecTiVos are fully hackable; I'd suggest buying whatever you can get the best deal on. Most differences are cosmetic; the electronic differences no longer affect hackability.
Since you have DirecTV you would pay only one $5.00 per month fee for ALL TiVos instead of the $12.00 per month TiVo charges for each TiVo.

Your first DTivo will actually cost you $10.00 per month when you take into account the mirroring fee for the additional receiver. The good news is that it has dual tuners so it's like having two SA Tivos, only with better picture quality. When you consider the extra tuner, the comparable cost of having two SA Tivos would set you back $12.95 for the first one and $6.95 for each additional SA Tivo. Therefore a single DTivo is about 1/2 the monthly cost of SA models. Additional DTivos only require the $5/month mirroring fee. The bottom line is that DTivos are an absolute steal in initial cost, monthly fees, quality and features.
