View Full Version : DTV releasing HMO

It has been mentioned on TCF that once DTV releases HMO (in ANY form), that all pertinent information on installing 4.x will be removed from these forums. I could see how any information on installing HMO might be removed. but not 4.x, since 4.x by itself does not enable HMO.
Does one need to print out all the good information now, and download everything available? Or is someone jumping the gun over there?

Do WHAT? First off, DTivo's 6.1 might give HMO, but not MRV. Second off, DirecTV can kiss my money goodbye as soon as they try such crap. Third, there's info on here on how to do stuff that was "new" a couple of years ago and has no practical purpose (other than history) now. If DirecTV thinks they can order a site to take down hacks, they're terribly mistaken.
I'll quit running 4.01b when there's something BETTER, and 6.1 ain't it.

I think that what they are saying, is that it will be theft of service once DTV offers any type of HMO. My questions is how can one steal the full HMO, if DTV does not offer the full HMO ?
I'd be happy to pay a small monthly HMO fee to DTV, as long as they leave my 4.x with HMO alone !!

HMO with MRV could be an extra $4.99 per month per receiver lets say.
So if you could hack your unit and install 4.0.1b due to DDB, they would be providing an avenue of "Full" theft of service. seems like you would be "grandfathered" in but I bet the lawyers would not be so kind.
so if its not FULL HMO with MRV, id say nothing to worry about.
If it is, how would they affect us already running 4.0.1b without phone line. disconnect our service w/o making monthly calls?
If only cable would get on the bandwagon of DUAL tuners, and full cablecard support..................

AlphaWolf has been posting lately, that DTV can install new software without the need for a phone line. Regardless of the upgradesoftware=false instructions.
Let me go look for the thread.

How about linking to the thread so that people have some idea what you're talking about?
http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?threadid=211622
And here is the thread that alluded to the DDB response if legit HMO is released:
http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35209
Since nothing has been announced regarding availability, pricing, etc., it is much too early to draw any conclusions.

Someone jumping the gun, and spreading misinformation and FUD over at TCF? No way! [sarcarsm] Shocking! [/sarcasm]

Incorrect. If DirecTV orders this site to take down hacks, they will be taken down without question or reservation.
..is how can one steal the full HMO, if DTV does not offer the full HMO
One cannot. Which is why I wouldn't worry at this point.

TCF is the last place you should look for factual information. Almost everything they have is secondhand information that came from here, either that or it is just stupid rumor bullshit that somebody made up.
Hell, look at this crap:

I know how,
Directivo includes a minimum $40 monthly fee as well but usually around $80 or more. That is why HMO should be included on Directivos. Or at least on a Premier account it should be included. Maybe hit em another $5 if basic only.
$5 to add HMO or $30 to add 31 paychannels and HMO.
It is great advertisement for standalone users with cable to make the switch as well.
I should be marketing for them.
No HMO on Directivo tells cable users to stay where they are or lose HMO. Bad marketing. Most cable users are paying $13 to Tivo and $60 for basic cable. $10 more gets way more channels better quality and 31 pay channels. Did i forget to mention NFL ticket access. It is true very little cable is digital.
give me a call D*V/T1V0 and we can negotiate.
P.S.
I want the adds showing a DSR704 removed because it is false advertisement since that is not the model a buyer will get. You know that was the favorite model so you use the picture as selling point yet all in house ugly Hughes are made today. If i am gonna be in charge of marketing i dont want all customers to have a free get out of 1yr agreement due to false advertising.
That will kill my commish checks each month.
You also want hackers to believe they can still play easily. Its wrong!
Next we will offer upgrades of our own at a reasonable price.
Custom to order Tivos from now on. You just choose how many hrs you want inside your ugly unhackable add serving Tivo box. We will also have any color you want on the Tivo box including BLACK AGAIN! Gold Red Blue Pink whatever. Next implement FM remotes. No more pointing at the Tivo.
Steal the only thing Dish have on us.
And i will leak the exploit as soon as possible to enable hacking fellas if i can get access to it. I will also get the brains here hired to help in new Tivo development rather then just steal your ideas.
Can you believe they havent called me?
Maybe i should remove the part of leaking hack info on the Tivo.

I personally don't see any reason whatsoever that directv would want to charge extra for MRV.
Usually when it comes to DVR stuff directv is always all about reducing the price. At first they subsidized the crap out of the tivo units making them cost nearly nothing, and then they took the liberty of removing tivos $10 per unit fees and replacing that with a very small $5 flat fee that is exempted entirely if you pay more than $40 a month on a subscription.
Adding a price for MRV sounds like something dishnet would do. They charge $5 a month for a PVR, add $5 a month if you activate dual tuners on the unit, and add $10 to that if it is an HDTV PVR.

I think they would charge more. They charge for everything else (granted not as bad as cable companies do but still). My monthly bill is well over $60 and I still have to pay the $4.99 mo/fee. They have charged this since the beginning to everone (at least that's my understanding). DTV also charges an additional $10/mo for HDTV.
Here is a breakdown of my bill with my 3 recievers (1 DSR-708 DirecTivo, 1 Samsung HD, 1 GEN2 Sony):
01/08/05 02/07/05 TOTAL CHOICE with Local Channels Monthly 39.99
01/08/05 02/07/05 DIRECTV DVR Monthly 4.99
01/08/05 02/07/05 HD Package Monthly 10.99
01/08/05 02/07/05 Network: CBS HD Available w/Local or HD Pkg 0.00
01/08/05 02/07/05 Network: FOX HD Available w/Local or HD Pkg 0.00
01/09/05 Additional Receiver 4.99
01/09/05 Additional Receiver 4.99
Totaly Monthly (pre tax) $65.95
I'd say the $39.95 +HD Subscription puts me well over the $40 mark that you mention. Is this soemthing worth complaining about?

DirecTV onlywaives the DVR fees if you get the $90+ platnum subscription (everything).

Hmm...the policy when I signed up was $40. I think I still have a brochure saying this. I am on the platinum myself though.

Actually for what its worth, several of these rips come from OTA ATSC broadcasts downconverted to SD resolutions, which is far far better than what you'll ever see from a directivo. Others (e.g. HBO type stuff) comes from BUD providers which aren't quite as good as ATSC broadcasts, but still much better than directivos.
