I have a Series 1 Sony SVR-2000 standalone TiVo, running 3.0-01-1-010 software. Telnet works and TivoWeb works. The Tivo responds to pings on it's DHCP assigned IP address.
This is how it looks:
C:\>ftp 192.168.0.101
Connected to 192.168.0.101.
and then after a long delay (about 2 minutes)
Connection closed by remote host.
i read all the threads about people having similar problems both here and on tivocommunity, and I've tried everything.
verifying that its running using "ps"
killing it and running it again
redownloading the tivoftpd.ppc file, renaming it to tivoftpd and chmod 755'ing it (and of course trying to run it again)
rebooting my tivo (while my girlfriend was watching America's Next Top Model, for which I got yelled at)
rebooting my pc
rebooting my router
connecting through a GUI FTP client (SmartFTP) using both active and passive connections
connecting from multiple computers via command line FTP and from a GUI ftp
running tivoftpd on a different port.
upgraded to the latest version of the tivoftpd for ppc from silicondust, same results.
any ideas/suggestions/other things I could try??
Thanks!

You might want to check whether you have any firewall software running on the PC side. Can you ftp to anything else?
Try telneting to the ftp port from a cmd window (telnet your-tivo-name ftp). If you are connecting, you should at least get:220 You are in TiVo Mode. No login necessary - hit enter at the promptsCTRL+] should get you back out.

Firewall software or VPN software are the usual culprits in situations liks this. However, in his OP, he claims that he's connecting from multiple computers via command line FTP and from a GUI ftp.
Sounds not like FW'ing issues, unless it's the same software on all the machines.
One other questions is, did it ever work?

Thanks for the responses!
I can definitely connect via FTP to other FTP servers - just tried right now again from the command line:
C:\>ftp ftp.microsoft.com
Connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
220 Microsoft FTP Service
User (ftp.microsoft.com:(none)):
501 'USER ': Invalid number of parameters
Login failed.
ftp> quit
221 Thank-You For Using Microsoft Products!
C:\>ftp tivo
Connected to tivo.
(two minutes or so pass)
Connection closed by remote host.
C:\>
I do have VPN software installed but I just tried without it and got the same results. I know its actually connecting to the tivo because the behavior is different when I stop the tivoftpd service. In that case it looks like this:
[quote]C:\>ftp tivo
> ftp: connect :Unknown error number
ftp>[/quote[
The only firewall - XP SP2 on this PC is off.
To the other question - no it never worked, ever since I first hacked the tivo and got tivoftpd installed on it it has never responded. But Telnet and tivoweb do work. hmmmmmmrph.

get a copy of the ftp client for your tivo, and try ftp'ing to localhost

Which VPN client? For example Checkpoint VPN-1 installs a policy which is active unless the software is unbound from the network card (unchecked in network properties), the service is stopped, changed to manual, then rebooted.
I recommend either uninstalling the VPN software totally and trying again (if for no other reason then testing/diagnostic purposes), or trying from a machine without it.

Thanks for the suggestion!!! I tried that and it was able to connect to itself! Now I'm getting somewhere.
So I just downloaded the quickest linux distro I could - the knoppix live CD (self booting, no install needed) - 35 minutes download with Bittorrent!
and tried from there and that works too. So it is a problem with my Win XP boxes.

Yep - I have Checkpoint VPN-1 Securemote and its installed on both PC's that I've tried to FTP from. So that probably is the problem... What is it about the VPN that causes the problem? I am able to FTP elsewhere.
Is there any other solution besides uninstalling the VPN?
Thanks for all the help. Finally I'm getting somewhere. :)

It has to do with the passive mode of the tivo ftp daemon.
As I said before:
unbind from the network card (unchecked in network properties), stop the service, change the service to manual, then reboot.
Reverse the steps when you need your VPN client.
Or, you can ask your system administrator to change the security profile that they are installing on your machine. Obviously, the above choice is more likely to happen.
