A customer gave me a phillips 612 series 1 SA that is stuck on the power-up screen. The A (40g) drive is bad and the B drive (20g) spins up. I tested it in my computer to make sure. Everything I've read on the site just says to copy the back-up image over to the new drive and expand it. Can I use a back-up of my Hughes series 1 dtivo (I haven't hacked it yet) to make a good back-up for the SA? It seems to me the proms would be different. This has a lifetime sub on it and I'd hate to just toss it. Thanks.

You can undoubtedly fix it, but not that way.

Everything I've read seems to deal with the dtivo. The posts I've read that deal with the SA's tell you to back up the existing drive, then expand it onto the new drive using mfs_tools. Do I need an image from another SA? The stickies I read didn't list the hd as a possible cause for the "powering up" hang-up, that's just the obvious thing I saw. Any suggestions on where to start? Keywords? My searches seem to be taking me in circles.

Not a repair question, moved to Newbie.

You need an appropriate image for your unit. This means that the three-digit suffix of the image version must match the three-digit prefix of your service ID. For instance: 3.1.0c2-01-1-011 matches 011-0000-1234-5678. Or, you can purchase InstantCake from PTVupgrade, which provides an appropriate image for your unit.
