I've been searching for two days and can find no similar problem.
I recently got a used RCA dvr40. I've restored 2 3.1.1 images and a 4.01 image and the same problem keeps happening.

Everything goes fine until I complete guided setup and get to the sceen where it says press live tv to continue. Everything becomes almost unresponsive. It takes forever to get to the live tv screen then nothing comes up.

If you try to get to a menu it takes forever. And then the background animations stutter. I can get channel 219 to show up but then it freezes immediately. If I take the access card out, the menus go back to working like normal.

Has anybody ever encountered this?

I've tested the hard drive and it seems to be working ok. I don't have an extra to try so I was hoping maybe for some help before wasting money on a new one.

I've never tried removing the access card, but stuttering background animations, freezing, and very slow response is almost always due to a bad hard drive. I guess a bad image could also cause it. One possible test - download the drive diagnostics, and run a thorough surface scan - this may take more than 24 hours - but has a good chance of locking out any questionable sectors.
