Ok, I've followed Hinsdale through step 7 exactly. I'm doing an exact copy from a series 2 40 Gb to a 120 Gb.

I just typed in the:

dd if=/dev/hdc of=/dev/hdb bs=1024k

command and hit enter. Is it normal for nothing to happen. I got the command on the screen with the blinking cursor underneath it. My LED is lit as well. not too much noise though. PS. I hit enter about 1 hour ago.

I just wanna know if this is normal and if I'm on the right track. Thanks and sorry for the super noob question

Yes, it's normal. Depending on your setup it can take anywhere from 1 (common) to 6 (uncommon) hours.

bs=2M speeds it up a bit. Also, Having the two drives on different ide chains helps too. Enabling dma helps, also. (hdparm -d1 /dev/hda /dev/hdc)

good to know. I already started at 1024k, but they are on two different IDE chains. I actually just stepped outta my house as it had been running for 2 hours. I haven't seen it since. It should now be around 4 hours, but I'm not home right now so i can't know. It's killing me.

Anyway, I'll let you know if it worked, whether you care or not.

As long as the HD activity LED is still lit, you are still going.

ok, I'm really impatient, and I just really want this to work.

Sorry for bein such an impatient newbie.

one more thing.....I can barely hear the hard drives making any noise. Is that right, usually you can hear a hard drive when processing. The reason I''m asking these simple questions is so I can upgrade my younger brother's tivo when I'm done with mine.

thanks for your patience btw.

just called my bro up at home and he said the read on the screen is now:

39205 in 39205 out or something like that. But it seems to have worked. Now when i get home later I'll complete the upgrade. Thanks a lot for the help everyone, it's greatly appreciated

looks good. 39205 records x 1MB (1024k blocks) is approx 40gb
