Please Help Me Get Started

Hi,

I'm trying to learn how to do video extraction.

I have read all the stickies and FAQ's here but they seem to assume prior knowledge, and I can't find a beginner's step by step guide to get started.

I am a programmer, and I know linux, but I have no idea how to get my PC and tivo communicating in the first place. From what I've read it seems some hardware hacks are necessary to get started, but I can't find anything that says, definitively: Step 1 -- do this, Step 2 -- do that, etc.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could point me to the right thread or FAQ for a true beginner, as I can't find it myself

I have a Series 2 Tivo Software Version 4.0.1b-02-240, Model #TCD24008A.

Start by looking in the "Newbie Guide" Index Thread located at the top of this forum. You'll find links to all kinds of guides there.

I read throught that already, and was surprised to find that there is nothing like what I described. Most of the guides there either 1) assume prior knowledge or 2) give instructions for series 1, which I am afraid of applying to my series 2.

Maybe I missed something, but I don't think so. If you see one, please let me know.

It's a little clumsy, but a Linux programmer should figure out how to solve that problem.
