View Full Version : Networking died on S2 Dtivo

I tried to connect to tivoweb today and could not, I thought this was odd, so I walked over to the tivo only to find all the network lights off on my Linksys 200M USB NIC.
I tried rebooting the tivo, no luck.
I tried powering down the tivo and then powering it back up, still no luck.
I plugged the 200M into a PC and verified that it is still functioning. Is there anything else I can check on my tivo? My software revision is still at the same version as always, so I don't know if some kind of behind the scenes software upgrade broke my networking or what.
Any suggestions of what to try next would be greatly appricated.
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Is there a simple way to reinstall just the networking section of the whole Monte hack?
If somehow some part of the USB enable / networking section software died, it would be easy to just pull the drive and reinstall that part.
Again, any suggestions would be greatly appricated.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the whole Monte hack". Monte is a mechanism to swap kernels, and doesn't have anything to do with networking. You haven't provided much info: what hardware model do you have (e.g. standalone or dtivo)? What software version is running? How was it hacked?
Your best bet would be to get on the console with a serial cable and see what's going on. Are the driver modules installed? Is the network configured? etc.

Sorry... I should not have said that. I mostly ment "the USB enabling part of hacking the tivo"

Hardware Model: Phillips DSR704 DirecTivo (Series 2)
OS: 3.1.1c-01-2-301
I hacked it using the dreaded SleeperISO. I know I know...
However it has worked perfectly for over 8 months with no problems. Then one day out of blue, poof.. no network connectivity.

I most likely need to pickup the serial console cable. The driver modules for the USB NIC would be those included with the SleeperISO. And again, the network has been configured and working perfectly (untill this problem).
Thanks again,
Ron
<Edit>
I was young and foolish when I did the SleeperISO, I would be interested in redoing the unit with the newer/better method, however I have several hours of video I need to extract first. Get the video off and then consider blowing the unit away in favor of the new method.

No, the problem is that you ignored the mini-FAQ (a sticky post you should have read), and you posted a question that nobody is going to be able to answer. Had you followed directions, we probably would have had enough information to solve your problem about six posts ago.
Q: What should I do/know before I ask a question here, to maximize the likelihood that somebody will be able to answer my question?
A:
Read:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
All the sticky threads in all applicable forums
Search:
http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/search.php?
(try: "view results by post", sort by ascending date, and other variations to increase the likelihood that you will find what you are looking for.)
http://www.google.com/
If you still don't know the answer, post:
Model, series, details of what you did to the machine.
Logs: kernel logs, tvlog, tverr, anything unusual. Look in /var/log on the TiVo.
Anything interesting you see on the serial console. If you don't have a "bash cable," make one. Troubleshooting blindfolded sucks.
What you tried and what you found when you read and searched. And the search terms you used.
It is critical that you make your thread title as descriptive and accurate as possible.

I have read the guides. I just wondered if it was a common problem that was easily resolved with a software update or something.
Again, using the SleeperISO was something I did a LONG time ago... and it did work flawlessly for almost a year now. I guess I was one of the lucky ones.
I have ordered a serial cable from 9thTee (I figured the cost of buying the parts and then doing it myself was more than just buying the premade solution). So I guess will be able to see via the serial connection if anything is failing on boot.
I am reading the guide on the convertion to Killhdinitrd. It seems very straight forward. Hopefully I will be able to get it all back up and running soon.
Thanks again for the push in the right direction.
Ron
P.S. Merry Christmas everyone!
