I have a newbie question. I hacked my tivo and upgraded the hdd about 1 year ago or so and use it to dl recordings to my pc and such. I know my Tivo software is old and there are some nice features added in the last few updates.

I know the hack prevents the tivo from taking updates. Is there anyway I can let it take an update with out killing my 250gig hdd?? I dont realy care about any of the old programs i have in there except telnet (since tivotogo is now out).

Thanks in advance and let meknow if I need to give anymore information about my tivo.

Knowing the model of TiVo, software version, and how you hacked it would all be a big help. If it wasn't for the large hard drive, this would be very easy. As it is, it MIGHT be possible to do without pulling the drive.

Sorry,
My Tivo is a Series2 Software 4.0.1.b
I went the easy way out to hack it and then added the encryption patch for extraction. Sleeper and Tserver.

Is it a Stand Alone or a DirecTiVo? And do you have TiVoWeb plus installed?

I was wondering the same thing. I used the sleeper ISO also to hack my Tivo so i could get Telnet and FTP, which both work. But I am still running an old version of software and it doesn't seem to be updating. Will it still update? Can i get it to update? If not, is there an easy way to undo the hack via Telnet (so i don't have to take the unit apart again) to get the updates?

Tivo Series2 Stand Alone unit
4.0.1b software
Sleeper ISO
2 hard drives

Also, I don't think I have TivoWebPlus installed unless the sleeper ISO did it. I know that i did not make a concious effort to install TivoWeb.

Thanks!!!

I'm not going to do a step by step on this, nor even direct you to specific threads. It is possible to do what each of you want, but it is not a trivial task. Experimenting witha 'test' drive would be a good idea, but I know that is not always possible.

In general, here is what I would recommend each of you do:

Install a killhdinitrd kernel to remove the two partition monte used by TiVoScripts. This will make upgrading much easier. See the killinitrd support thread in Series 2 support; I've also written a procedure. Search for it.

Set the prom password to something you know 'crypto -u -srp password '
If you don't already have one, buy, make, or borrow a TiVo - PC serial cable.

Copy the contents of the active partition to the inactive partition; edit fstab to reflect the change in the root partition.

At this point, you have two identical copies of the software on your system, and you can switch between them from the prom menu. You should be able to recover from any mistake without pulling your drive.

Now update all hacks in ONE of the partition sets with the latest versions. I recommend AlphaWolf's All in one Series 2 utilities, Jamie's backport USB drivers, and whatever other hacks you have running (ftp, mfs-ftp, caller ID, etc. Keep careful notes, you will have to do this again.

As you install each set of updates, reboot the system to make sure everything is working. If something goes wrong, switch to the unaltered partition set, mount the inactive root, and fix the problem.

At this point you have a hacked system that has the latest drivers, PLUS notes on how to get there. (If you were clever, you put all the hacks you installed into as few directories as possible).

If you are running a SA system, or a DirecTiVo at 3.1.1x, check /mfs/SwSystem for software upgrades. The latest should be present. If you are running 4.x on a DirecTiVo, locate AlphaWolf's 4.1b slices, and see his thread in Series 2 support on using them.

Edit /tvbin/installSw.itcl, changing 'restart' to 'exit 0'. Run it with '/tvbin/installSw.itcl new_software_version '. After it completes the installation, mount the updated partition, install all the hacks, (Don't forget a killhdinitrd kernel), cross your fingers, and reboot. It should come up running the upgraded software, with all hacks installed.

If you guys are already running the 4.01b software on SA S2 then the new 7.X software is the next step. The only advantage of adding it is for the T2G support which with what you are running is a moot point... Everything T2G can do I've been doing since I hacked my first TiVo, the big diff is that I have more control over the process and the final quality.

If I do not care about my hacks and willing to put them back on again, and used monte to hack can I just allow it to update and everything be fine again or will it cause problems with having tivoscripts. I have never seen where it wanted to download 4.0. It has just tried to update to a newer version ov 3.0.

 A unit running 3.1.1x will NEVER get a 4.x upgrade from TiVo / DirecTV.
