Not to disagree with a man like JJ, but truthfully the answer is maybe - and theft of service is NOT what I'm talking about.

If you have, or intend to get, an old Standalone TiVo (Series 1) then you can use much of the basic functionality and hacks without a monthly or lifetime sub (its what I do).

The drawback is that the TiVo becomes a HDD based VCR with no guide data, all you can do is enter manual recordings.

But hacks wise I have several going including telnet, ftpd, and mfs_ftp for extraction, plus I just reclaimed 9.5GB of recording space from the "reserved" area thanks to the smart people here and some minor league hacking on my part.

Its all a matter of preference...

You do need a Tivo subscription to use any of the Tivo's features. The hacks will work regardless of subscription status.
