First off let me start by saying that I have never hacked or needed to hack a Tivo and this is my 1st post so please be patient with me, but I have read several of the guides so I know what is involved and I should be capable. I'm guessing the least that can be done is upgrading the drive and enabling the USB for use with other tools for pulling content off the disk but i'm still not clear on several things -

1) Can the Home Media Option be enabled through hacking? I've got a situation with several HD Tivos in the same house and keeping track of what programs are on which Tivo would be impossible without somehow networking them.

2) If it is hacked should the modem be disabled? Will I need to somehow disable DirecTV updates to keep it working properly? Should it be connected to the outside network (through a router)?

3) Are there hacks that allow control over the Tivo as it would control another device either through the serial port or via TCP/IP? i.e. Sending remote control codes and possibly getting information back about current channel number/program info dynamically?

4) Dumping to DVD. With a Pioneer Series 2 DVD Tivo on the same network would it be possible to pull the program from one of the HD Tivos and burn it on DVD? I'm guessing that a non HD series 2 Tivo won't playback HD material as SD, but just regular SD programming?

5) Are there any mods that can be done that speed up the UI?

6) Are there any ongoing maintanence issues associated with hacking Tivos in general and the HR10-250 specifically?

Thanks in advance for any info,

Bryn

1. HMO can't be run on the HR10-250 even with hacking!

2. Why disable the modem when unplugging the phone line is so easy? Software upgrades can be easily blocked.

3. I'm not clear what you're asking, but look at TiVoWeb Plus.

4. Look for answers in the extraction forum.

5. No, but if you can accomplish it the entire TiVo community will shower you with praise. Heck, those with spare girlfriends will send them to you! :)

6. Don't let it take a software upgrade until you are ready.

All of your questions have been asjed and answered many times.

Just a few responses though...

1 - HMO is only available on v4 or greater OS. Since the only versions that support HD are 3.1.5x, then it is not possible to have a high definition HMO box.

2 - Hacking requires ongoing maintenance, especially when a new version of the Tivo OS is released.

3 - As far as I know, no DVD player in existence will play back HD content yet.

Bummer, I doubt well ever see the HMO option on the HR10-250 then.

2. Why disable the modem when unplugging the phone line is so easy? Software upgrades can be easily blocked.

Not always easy to unplug when say it's mounted in an equipment rack. I"ll take it then that it can simply be left plugged in and upgrades simply blocked if need be?

3. I'm not clear what you're asking, but look at TiVoWeb Plus.

I'd like to have the same control that you would have over the Tivo via the IR Remote through TCP/IP or the Serial Port. Ideally I'd like to be able to control all the IR functions through a hardwire connection similar to RS232 etc. I will check out the program you mentioned, thanks :)

4. Look for answers in the extraction forum.

It doesn't really apply if the HD Tivo can't be networked with a DVD-R Tivo through the HMO, thanks though.

5. No, but if you can accomplish it the entire TiVo community will shower you with praise. Heck, those with spare girlfriends will send them to you!

HA! It's always seem to run pretty slow to me, especailly when using the guide.

Yes, I was referring to SD programming recorded on the drive of a HD Tivo to a DVD-R Tivo, this was all hypothetical anyway since it seems it can't be hacked to support the HMO.

Thanks for the help guys. Any interest in CES pics and info of the new CableCard HD Tivo due out in '06 or have they been posted already?

HMO simply allows transferring of shows between 2 networked units, as well as streaming of MP3s and Photos from a PC. This has nothing to do with being able to network your unit and extract unencrypted video for burning/playback on DVD, which indeed can be done with your unit.

My intention was to have the HD Tivo viewable via the HMO from the list of recorded programs via a DVD Tivo for simple program archiving to DVD. I'm sure there are other ways around it but it would require using a PC and Linux/Unix Tools. I can do that but the end user I am putting this system together for won't. All he wants to do is archive recorded programs to DVD in the easiest way possible and he's not really tech literate. I figure a Tivo 2 with a built in DVD Burner is about the simplest way to do it but alas there is no HMO available to network the HD Tivo programms (Standard Def programming mainly) to the DVD Tivo.

Thanks,

Bryn
