View Full Version : Not sure how to proceed

Hi everyone. I have an HDVR2 with a 120 gig drive I added last year using Hinsdale's how-to. Everything works really well. I now want to move on to the next step - BASH and video extraction.
Not having kept up with this forum for a while I see the route I was going to take (sleeper's) is now out of favor. The problem is there are many seemingly conflicting instructions on how to proceed.
I don't need 4.0 right now. I just want BASH and telnet.
Question: Can I do this with my existing setup, or should I restore my original image to a fresh 160gig, enable LBA support, and start from there?
Thanks.

Do you want to save your recordings? If not, I would definitely suggest restoring (expanding) the original image to a new 160 gig drive, and monteing into an LBA-48 kernel using the technique NutKase describes here. (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37570)
Add AlphaWolf's Series 2 utilities; Jamie's backported drivers, etc. and you're half way there.
If you insist on saving your recordings, it MIGHT be possible the contents of two drives onto one larger drive and make it work - I don't know enough to give a definitive answer. Otherwise, you can skip the monte, use a killhdinitrd kernel, and hack away.

No, I've already accepted the fact that I'll lose my recordings. Thanks, I'll have a look at that post.
Is monte really necessary now? I thought killhd... eliminated the need for it.

You don't need to monte unless you want LBA48 support. Then you would have a killhdinitrd kernel (to allow you to hack), monteing into an LBA48 kernel giving you large disk support.

That's what I thought. Ok. As I understand it these are the steps I need to take:
1. Get serial BASH working just in case.
2. Get a smallish drive, format it in FAT32, stick it in my PC, etc.
3. Do a clean restore using mfstools of my original image, enlarging it to 120 meg in this case.
4. killhd... the kernel.
5. install telnet and ftp
6. stick the drive in my dtivo, plug it in, hold my breath.
7. (assuming everything else worked) install all the other stuff via ftp
Is this basically it?

Friend,
How are you planning to connect to the TiVo to do your ftp? Do you have an ethernet adapter? Or do you plan somehow to transfer files via the serial line? If so, how is this done? Thanks.
I have hacked my tiVo, have a bash prompt, but am unable to see my HDVR2 on my local network. Something is wrong with the driver. Let me know if you get your networking working, so to speak. :-)

You're missing:
4a. Install AlphaWolf's All in One Series 2 Utilties
4b. Install network drivers
Note that the daemon is already on the drive, the ftp daemon must be copied.
