Now that I've sleepered my TiVo, does it ever need to make a call again? If I allow it to make calls, what would happen?

 What kind of a TiVo? Stand Alone TiVos must call TiVo to get guide information; they also report viewing information. DirecTiVos must call DirecTV to report PPV information; they also call TiVo to report viewing habits, and to install any updates.
In either case, if you are running the latest software version for the system, nothing much will happen. If you're running an outdated version, or 4.x on a
DirecTiVo it will try to force an upgrade.

I have a DirecTivo, but I don't use any ppv, ever. Before the mod, DirecTv told me that the Tivo has to make a call once every 60 days or that it stops functioning.
I'm only half way through hacking it though because I was able to expand the capacity but my other goal was the be able to enable and use the usb port to make the calls over the internet.
So far I've only been able to enable the ports, but I haven't been able to successfully telnet, ftp, or get into it.
I assumed that the Tivo would still need to make its call but then I started thinking that maybe DirecTv was providing the guide information and that the Tivo menu was just an overlay. In that case, I probably wouldn't even go through the hassle of getting the usb port to work over the network.
