View Full Version : Do people leave Xbox on all the time?

I have noticed that the dashboards usually have settings for spinning down the hard drive, controlling the fan/temperature, etc. -- do people leave their Xboxes on all the time? The obvious gripe is no power on/off by remote -- you have to hit the button. When using the console in the intended fashion, that is no big deal because you need a disk, etc. However, with XBMC I don't find myself inserting a disk very often. And, I am not even into games but I know a lot of people put games on the Xbox HDD.

I am just wondering, do people leave the Xbox on all the time and, if so, what are the appropriate settings?

Unfortunately the Xbox turns itself off after about 6 hours of non-use. I don't if that can be changed.

I think you can change that -- there is a "do not power down" setting in the BIOS somewhere. At least, I can speak to EvoX having this.

Exactly. I leave mine on all the time, for exactly the reasons mentioned above.

What do you have yours set on for spin-down of the HDD and temperature/fan controls? I would like to leave mine on, but don't want to hear the noisy fan all the time.

I'm always in XBMC, and I've left everything at the default settings. I have everything in a closed cabinet, so I don't hear it anyway :)

Actually you can disable the shut down feature in the original xbox dash under settings i believe. should say something like "power off xbox after 6 hours of inactivity" you can enable or disable it. it is not done in the bios.

You can spin down the CPU fan, but the big fan on the back is still too loud for my liking. I considered finding a quieter replacement, but I don't know if I care that much to bother.

Closed cabinet while in use? How do you get to your controllers? :p

Mine is in a closed cabinet as well. Controllers are wireless. And yes, I leave it on all the time.

M$ is giving out new power cords because they say the last power cords may start a fire or burn you (ouch). they've left burn marks. ha!

So it's not good to leave on your Xbox. at least until you get your new power cord.

That only applies to certain Xboxes, though, and I think they were all Series 1.

BTW, if you carefully read all the literature Microsoft sends you in regard to the "power cord problem", you'll see it's actually a flaw inside the Xbox, that they chose to "solve" by giving everyone a special cord with a circuit breaker.

The cord itself has no flaw, else they would have just replaced it with a regular one.

Correct. The flaw is in the soldering on the power supply on Xboxes 1.0 and 1.1. The new power cable is nothing but a cable with a circuit breaker. The solder can still short out your Xbox and cause SERIOUS damage before the breker blows. There have also been reports of the breaker being too weak and tripping for no apparent reason... So - it just makes things worse, not better. If you have a 1.0 or 1.1 Xbox, you are better off getting a new power supply for it (that is if you have the bad solder problem to start).

Perhaps yours does. Mine does not.

I live mine on 24x7. As does another poster above, I have mine in a closed cabinet. There's a Tivo right above it, and at any given point in time between one and three laptops running, so we never ever hear it.

I don't use it for games at all, so no controllers. I do wish you could power it on/off remotely -- useful for those times I hose it up when I upgrade XBMC. :)

I've installed the XIR remote found here (http://cheaplpc.com/xir/default.asp) into both my XBoxes. Takes 5 minutes to install, no soldering required and worth every penny.

Thanks for the tip! Soon as he gets some in stock, I'm ordering.
