I recently had to replace my Phillips series1 DirecTivo with a Hughes dvr80. The picture on my 53" is noticeably worse than it was with the Phillips. Straight swap out, no other changes. Why is this?

The only possible reason is the physical connections, since the precisely same video stream is being played back. Check your wiring.
Incidentally, this question isn't really relevant here, but good luck.

Are you using coax, or the 3 RCA jacks or s-video? Coax will give you the worst of the three, with some folks having better luck with the RCA jacks and some with S-video.

Strictly speaking, the progression [from worst to best] video quality (ignoring resolution issues) is
Coax
RCA/Composite
S-Video
Component
[edited to fix my stupid error, to prevent confusion]
(I say ignoring resolution because its crazy to compare component w/ the other three, but the signal strength is cleaner too)

I think what you meant to say was:
Coax (RF)
RCA (Composite)
S-Video (Y/C)
Component (RGB)

Yeah, ironic and stupid mistake. Fixed, to prevent someone from being confused.
