I am trying to connect to my Tivo from my notebook via a crossover cable. Tivo is using a static ip address so is notebook. I am able to ping Tivo with IP that was assigned to new drive. When I try to FTP tivo I get first line connection established, Then next line error connecting to tivo. I try a different ftp progam and I get Network error, connection refused.
Any info would be great, Thanks

Can you telnet in to the Tivo? If so, first step is to use that to determine if tivoftpd is running. Alternatively, use the serial port to do the same thing.

No firewall running.

What happens when you try? How did you hack your tivo--remove the drive? You really should consider getting a serial connection and bash to the thing in order to help troubleshoot such issues.

I got the drive off fleeBay it has all of the latest hacks,Unscrambled Video Extraction ,USB 2.0 Ethernet Enabled ,Telnet ,TivoWeb Remote Control , The drive works fine except for the networking feature. When I Telnet I get a first line:Connected to tivo. Then second line:Error connecting to tivo. I should also say that I tried to connect from my Notebook to my PC via crossover cable and have the same results as connecting to the Tivo. I have check all ip settings maybe I am missing something.
Thanks for help.

Have you tried calling the person who sold you the drive?

I have been in touch with the seller. Being the fact I can not connect to my PC would lead me to think the Tivo drive is ok and that I must have a setting wrong,I just don't know where.
Thanks

You have three options:
1. Continue to insist that the seller keep supporting you with the unit.
2. Build a serial cable and confirm you have bash. Then find out what's wrong.
3. If that does not work, pull the drive; put it in a PC booted with the proper boot CD and figure out what's wrong that way.
Unfortunately, if the idea was to get an up and running hacked Tivo without knowing anything about anything, the welcome here will be cool. Be prepared to do a lot more reading than you have already, and when you have found out what exactly was done to the unit, ask questions.
Finally, read this:

I had trouble connecting via a direct connect via a crossover cable. Not a lot of information here on that, but it is out there. It was hard. I came across a few. I have some posts in this thread here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36880). Check it out. I put a follow up post in it, to explain exactly what I did. And I was using a lap top. I don't remember much about it now, but I hope the info in that thread (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36880) will assist you. Have you attempted to telnet into your tivo with tera term, using the IP address of the Tivo? That is what I did once I got the crossover connection working. I don't believe I did FTP.

You have failed to state the model number of yr tivo. Is it series 1 or 2? Is it stand alone or directivo? What is the software verision it is running? You stated it has a static IP address. How do you know the IP address? Are you checking attached devices within your router and just narrowing it down? Since you are attampting direct connects, you may not be using a router. DO you have the setup working on a router setup without a direct connect if this is available to test? It is hard setting up a direct connect if you do not know that it worked fine with a normal type connect not requiring configuration. Are the lights on your network interface lighting up? What kind of network interface are you using? I can attempt to assist you, as I tried doing refering you to that thread. THough that thread might not be useful depending on the equipment/software version you are using. The more information we have, the better we can assist you towards a resolution. I cannot stress enough, about having a serial cable for use with a com port for diagnostic purposes. I understand you bought your unit off of fleebay which support for tivos bought from that source is not readily offered. But I am sure some folks here would love to give you some tips and pointers on doing the hacks yourself, so you can learn how to hack your tivo and better understand what is happening. It won't happen over night so be patient. And read read read. I don't mind helping in areas that I may have some knowledge, but I am no means a guru, just an average joe who has done several hacks. Been in it since extreme25 on series one dtivos. All my knowledge is limited to dtivos. Currently running 2 with 4.01b software on them. But I was able to get an older version running with a direct connection as referenced in the thread I was referring to in prior post. Good Luck!!
