View Full Version : killhdinitrd on Tivo version 7.1?
OK, I am a little bit confused about killhdinitrd. I have 7.1 on my Toshiba SD-H400 and not sure if I can install it on this machine. I have already successfully upgraded the drive but want to install other upgrades.
From what I understand killhginitrd can only be installed on certain versions of TIVO software and these versions are 4 or lower. Can I install killhdinitrd on version 7.1?
The other question is regarding telnet / transferring the programs on the tivo. Not sure which command / software to use to transfer things like Tivo web etc. to the TIVO?
Thanks

See this (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40715) thread. Summary: a killhdinitrd'd 3.1.5 kernel works with 7.1 as long as you replace iptables with one that always returns 0. DHCP may not work, so you may have to use a static IP.
Most hacks are not yet available on 7.1. TW/TWP, for example.

Interesting. Has any work started on making TWP work yet? (I don't see any discussion in the TWP development thread...)
Is there a list of programs that don't work under 7.x? I have read the linked thread, and found '7.1' say "A NoCSO patch was posted. mfs_ftp works for extraction, but to do inserts the 'event' code needs to be updated. HMO-superpatch, TWP, and other hacks will need significant work to port." I guess that's probably the best list out there ;)
TWP, tserver, and vserver are the only things I really use right now, so I guess I won't be updating to 7.1 yet! :)
Either that, or I'll take the upgrade and see what I can do to help TWP along. Is there any report anywhere of why/how it's not working?

The 7.1 TWP port could be easy; I haven't studied it, I just know it won't work out of the box. Port 80 is already in use by the tivoapp built in web server, for one thing. The event structure is different in 7.1, and there is no tcl "event" command, for example. I don't know how significant this is to TWP or TWP modules.

I see. I guess there probably hasn't been much of a hue & cry raised because so few people are running 7.1.
TWP can run on any port with an update to tivoweb.cfg, so that's one issue taken care of (tho it's not exactly preferred to need a port # just to access TWP). That may be enough to get it running, and fixing any broken functionality can follow from there.
I guess I will take the update then. It's waiting for me in SwSystem... ;)

Dumb question... (This is newbie tivo, so I should be ok, right?)
You are talking about a Standalone Series 2 there, right?
I have a TCD24004A (Standalone S2 40hr, not a nightlight model of course). I was trying to take baby steps, so I tried "upgrading" to a killhdinitrd'd 3.1.5 kernel. That did not boot so well with OS 4.0.1b-2-240... I got kernel-module version mismatches (I can attach the serial cable output if necessary).
I realize in retrospect that the kernel has to match the modules. I replaced my 4.0.1a killhdinitrd'd kernel and went on my way, no problems.
The question is, does 7.1 contain modules that will work with the 3.1.5 kernel? I'm pretty sure that's what you're saying here, I just want to make sure... [that's why it's a dumb question! :)]

In general, the linux kernel version must match. You can get it with uname -r. Both 7.1 and 3.1.5 run a 2.4.20 linux kernel. That doesn't guarantee that modules are interchangable between them, but testing has verified that 7.1 modules do work with a 3.1.5 kernel.

Is it the same kernel for 7.1a as well?

Is it the same kernel for 7.1a as well? There are at least two flavors of 7.1: 7.1a-01 and 7.1a-02. I haven't tested either one, but I see no reason why a kernel that worked with 7.1 wouldn't also work with them. Try it and see.

The 3.1.5 kernel works on 7.1a-01 just fine, provided you do the iptables replacement noted in the linked thread.
I'm running the deprecated version of TWP and have made a couple of edits to make most of that version work.
I may install the latest version of TWP and have a look. At least I'll be able to get some of it working but I'm by no means an expert on the modules and most of TWP.
I recommend we keep most 7.1 experimentation regarding 'general' non- development type hacks in the other thread since we're further along there.
Please don't ask me to define 'general' non- development... :) ...but I guess I mean this kind of stuff. Pointing out differences notices, etc.

Is there any convenient way for you to post what you've done, so the rest of us can try to poke and prod the rest of it into submission?
No reason to reinvent the wheel, etc., etc.. I'm guessing you've already solved the first error (on line 1 of httpd-tt.tcl)...
I know there used to be a Sf.net project for TWP. Does that help, or is there a thread to use already, or... ?

Sure, I'll post what I've done but right now I've went back to 4.0.1b-02/MRV/with 7.1 certificates and am doing some testing.
When I slide the 7.1 drive back in I'll post something...
