I searched for days before finally coming across a solution, so I thought I would post this for everyone else who might be looking for the same answer.

I was just upgraded to 7.1a, and as a result, lost all my backdoor codes. (I had done the backdoor hack to v.4, and so had the 30sec-skip and time display backdoors active.)

[For those not familiar: since TiVo did not release the backdoor code to version 4, in order to enable backdoors one actually needed to hex edit the hard disk directly to change the backdoor code to '3 0 BC', similar to the older versions.] I tried in vain to search for the backdoor hex offset and new hex code for 7.1, but wasn't able to find anything directly relating to enabling backdoors without using the Monte solution (which I don't really want to do).

What wasn't obvious at first is that TiVo HAS released the backdoor code to 7.1 (ostensibly to potential 3rd-party application developers) for use with the HME SDK. This code, entered from the System Information screen, is 'Clear-Clear-0-0'. Unlike version 4, there is no need to edit the hard disk directly.

Once you enter this code, backdoors will be enabled. Then you can add your personal favorite backdoor codes (Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select, etc.) and your TiVo will be back under your control.

[Disclaimer: I have only tested this on my own machine, which I had already hacked with the v4 backdoor code. As far as I can tell, this shouldn't make a difference, but one never knows. Any successes or failures, please post with software version number (7.1, 7.1a, etc.) and TiVo model number here...]

But rest assured there's at least one TiVo with 7.1a doing 30sec-skips, without doing the Monte hack.

What makes you think this is a backdoor code? Once entered, does the System Information screen display "Backdoors Enabled"?

Then you can add your personal favorite backdoor codes (Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select, etc.) and your TiVo will be back under your control.
No backdoors are required for this "undocumented feature". It will work on ALL units regardless of whether or not backdoors are enabled.

But rest assured there's at least one TiVo with 7.1a doing 30sec-skips, without doing the Monte hack.
See above.

Ok, I did some more checking. I found that the 30-sec skip and clock display codes worked fine; you are correct that 7.1 doesn't need backdoors enabled to make them work. OTOH, I also found that turning off the overshoot correction and some of the other functions does <i>NOT</i> work on my TiVo until I put in the C-C-0-0 code.

Well, this thread: http://forums.tivo.com/pe/action/forums/displaysinglethread?rootPostID=10155315&returnExpertiseCode=, and this one: http://hme.pvrblog.com/node/7, and this one: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/archive/index.php/t-223623.html, for starters...

Oh, and let's not forget about this: "Because HME is an Early Access release, it will not be enabled on your DVR until you key in a special backdoor sequence using the remote control. See the SDK for more details."

Here's a google cache link for easy reading, even: http://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:y3lUhBGXs1cJ:tivohme.sourceforge.net/%3Fpage%3Dfaq+%22Because+HME+is+an+Early+Access+release,+it+will+not+be+enabled+on+your+DVR+until+yo u+key+in+a+special+backdoor+sequence+using+the+remote+control.%22&hl=en

Sorry to be a smartass, but the tone of your post rather ticked me off. I may not be the most accomplished TiVo hacker out there, but I'm not an ldiot, and I've done my homework. I was pointing out something that (at least to me) wasn't obvious, in order to help other people who might be similarly frustrated.
