Just finished upgrading my HDVR2 with 4.0.1b, and I can telnet fine over TCP/IP using a crossover cable to my laptop. I'm having trouble getting an FTP connection using WS_FTP, SmartFTP, or the FTP command from WinXP dos prompt. Here's what I've tried:

- ports 21 and 3105, passive, non-passive, anonymous, non-anon, etc.
- verified tivoftpd is running, then killed it, then restarted it
- rebooted
- renamed netfilter-enable
- created network place "ftp:\\192.168.1.111"
- I can ping and telnet ok

When I FTP from DOS prompt, it says "connected to 192.168.1.111", the cursor just flashes (can enter anything), then times out and says "connection closed by remote host".

Is there something I haven't tried? Is there another way to easily transfer a couple of files while I continue to work this problem?

update: After bridging the hardwire connection (laptop to Tivo) to my wireless connection (laptop to router), I was able to get FTP to work from another computer on the network. Still cant get it to work from the laptop that is connected directly to Tivo. This is very strange since the computer that FTP works on has to go through the laptop to get to the Tivo. If there's a network expert out there with a theory, I'm very curious why this works.

Silly question but...What OS was the other machine? Could it have been the XP firewall?

Both computers are XP with the firewall turned off.

Hi,

This is a long shot, but are you using any vpn software on the laptop?

I use CheckPoint Securemote, and when it is running, I can ping and telnet to the Tivo, but ftp to port 21 on the tivo will not work.

Very interesting. I am using Checkpoint VPN on the laptop, but I shut it down before trying the connection. Did you ever find a workaround? This running up and down stairs is getting old.

I'd also check any firewall you have, not just the built in XP - Norton, McAfee, etc and make sure it is set to allow traffic through port 21 and to trust traffic to/from 192.168.1.xxx

Hi,

If you go into the properties on the network connection, you will see a CheckPoint thing, along with the internet protocol, file and printer sharing, etc. If you uncheck that, you will be able to ftp to the tivo.

Weird, isn't it? What the heck are they doing to mess that up? Took me forever to figure it out.

Thanks Monty! That really sounds like it will work. Unfortunatlely I'm traveling this week. This dam job really gets in the way of my Tivo hacking! ;)

update: that works.
