View Full Version : Guide Data for TWO zip codes?

I've got a few unhacked series 2 boxes and a problem which is nonstandard.
I've posted in TCF and asked the TiVo CSR directly and there isn't a solution that they can come up with.
So, I figure that perhaps if I were to hack my box ...
My problem? I have Dish Network service for one DMA yet ... ahem ... live in another at least some of the time. Think camping for extended periods of time in an RV. I would like to have the guide data for my home DMA as well as antenna and/or cable guide data from the temporary location of my box.
The inellegent solution would seem to be to have one TiVo for E* and the other for antenna/cable and feed them each different zip info. Perhaps with sanderton's hack to manage multiple TiVos simultaneously I could manage to record shows only once rather than twice.
A more elegent solution would be, of course, to hack my box to allow for guide data for both sources to be pulled from TiVo.com directly. I tried searching here for "guide data" but nearly all of the discussions were giving various "newby guide"s. Those that weren't all seemed to be discussions of other aspects of guide data.
Do any of you know whether this hack (pulling multiple streams of guide info from Tivo.com) has been achieved?
Thanks...

Um..... the "ahem" concerns me.

Not inellegent [sic], just legal.

Possibly, but illegal. This represents a theft of service.

See above.

Not discussed here. Buy another Tivo.

I don't know why people post terse messages here without linking to the original discussion and background information:

(yes, really.. "tivocommunity" is not a banned word)
Although I am not aware of any ready-made solution, you can clearly see which two lineups are being requested (in an ota+satellite configuration) by sniffing the daily call. It should be possible to change one of these lineups to reflect the area you are traveling to, although it's not something I would want to reconfigure frequently.
A good understanding of guide and headend slice formats would be necessary to troubleshoot this setup. As JJ indicated, those topics are not discussed at DDB, but it's something you should be able to figure out on your own by looking at the readguide output.

Fair 'nuff. I already have the second TiVo, so I am doing okay here, but I still wanted an elegent solution.
I figured this was pretty close to the edge.
The reason for the "ahem" is because I don't have a formal RV waiver for distant networks so don't bother formally changing the service address when going in the RV for a month or so. Typically it is close to home (close enough to be in the same spotbeam) so there really isn't a problem with DisnNetwork.
I don't see exactly how downloading guide data from the company I pay to download guide data is exactly "theft of service", but I trust your judgement here. Even so, a brief explanation of why this would be theft of service would be interesting (at least for me).

Point noted.
I suspect that many people don't bother mentioning "that other forum" <grin> here is that over there that is how people refer to this forum. I suspect that also, some are just following suit, not having seen many references to TCF here.
Thanks for posting the direct link.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it before the trip.
One of the benefits of taking only one or two long trips per year might be that I only need to fiddle with the TiVo ahead of time two or three times.
Thanks ...

You ever see that movie called the village? Thats TCF; a bunch of simpletons afraid to even merely mention the name of something that might be outside of their little circle. The outside world doesn't really care much about TCF though, the knowledge of the subject matter is very primitive there compared to what you find here, thus we never really mention them much by simple lack of necessity.

Um ... E* doesn't use TiVo. People with TiVo can use Dish Network much the same way they can use various cable systems.

Fair 'nuff. <grin>
It might also have something to do with David Bott (not "David Bought") having an issue with anything that would point people toward things he thinks the TiVo corporation would feel uncomfortable with. He might also be right on that matter. TiVoBill's post on stripping DRM from .tivo files (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=217488) seems to confirm this.
They are a moderately friendly bunch, though.
I'm still interested in hacking one of my boxes just to see if I can do it. Don't really need to and won't really have time to do it unitl July, but I've read enough here to convince me that there are quite a few functional reasons to hack the box as well.
All the best...
