i would like to know if it is possible to boot up knoppix and the mount the tivo drive and then possibly get access to the file(s) that control the recording quality. I would like to enabal vbr plus up the max bitrate some. is this possble? are the recording config files even in text format? Yea i know tivoweb can change the defualt quality settings but it just seems like the knoppix way would be alot easier and quicker since i already know the settings that i want to change it to..
this is on an hdr312 btw..
thanks for any info :)

Anything that involves writing to the proprietary MFS filesystem is going to have to be done on the tivo itself. You could always just use tivosh to manipulate it if you don't want to install tivoweb though. Doing that just involves learning a bit of TCL (which is actually quite an easy language that only takes a few hours to learn.)

 A couple of comments: Speaking from experience, if what you 'know' contradicts what AlphaWolf says - he is almost certainly right.
In this case, it's quite easy to check. Hook a TiVo drive up to a pc, boot from one of the many tools cds available, and use pdisk to see the partitions on the drive. You will see that all except 1 Gig of drive space is in MFS partitions.

Anything that involves writing to the proprietary MFS filesystem is going to have to be done on the tivo itself. For what it is worth, the mfs_* library has functions that allow a limited write capability on the PC side. You can write over an existing FSID with new data, but you can't change the size or allocate new FSIDs. I used this for the PC side sdh-400_unlock utility and it is used there to overwrite the DiskConfiguration object in MFS.

well crap. i recorded an F1 race last night and it looks like digital hell! it was on high quality too. hmm, im going to have to do something about this.
i dont have a net card. i thought i would be able to do tivoweb over seriel but the faq for it is down and it looks like ALOT of trouble. i do have instantcake. anyway i could edit the image on it to the custom recording settings that i want and then bake it like that? or perhaps someone that has an hdr312 that has the custom settings i want already set up could make an image and then send it to me?
any other ideas?
