I'm looking to see WHAT was installed on a HD I recently put into my DSR80. I have a wireless hook-up and can find the BASH with hyperterminal, and can see the directories by ftp//:IPADDRESS.
I'd like to see what hacks have already been installed on this HD, so I don't duplicate.
I tried cd /var then a ls and saw some files, but I don't see any telltale names I recognize. Can someone help me find out how to see what's already installed, what to look for?
Thanks! :D

And where exactly did this hard drive come from?

Staples. It's a 200GB. Got it for ~$60 after rebates.

I think he meant the image or whatever that is on the drive.

You have downloaded an illegal image.
Distributing an image with hacked kernels and other add-ons is a copyright violation.

that has yet to be determined, it could be the virgin image (?), i'm trying to determine if it is, or has some add-ons. planning on putting a few of my own, such as tytool, and some of the compelation files super, etc.

If you have Networking it's hacked.

Great! Then, it's already started. I am looking through the TYTOOL faq and have downloaded the program. Looking to put some other stuff on it as well. I'm going very slow though. No need to rush as it's working fine. So, any suggestions of what would be good to have? Maybe it's already there? It would be cool to have the CALLER ID up, and other things, but I don't need it to call outr as I order PPV online.
Cheers, Twell.

Great! Then, it's already started. So you think it's great that you're running an illegal software image that expressly violates the distribution agreement on work that people here put a lot of effort and time into?
That's just... great.

Thanks Dplatt. I was looking for a way to say what you just said..

Dplatt,
Your right. It's not fair to have software that violates distribution agreements. Indeed, people have put a great deal of effort into all the various software addendums out there. I should have just copies/backed up my original drive, then begun to put the various files available on, rather than search the emule as suggested in the other posts. I may just do this, as it does allow me to know from where I started, and my original questions was where am i now? I've seen many FAQ's which provide a great resource on what programs would be good to have. It's easy enough to do, but placing the downloaded image is what I started with. I'll delve into it more, maybe get another cheap drive to do the back-up and restore. My series 1 died and the 3.something was lost. So looking at the series 2, doing the same linux type install.
Cheers,
Twell

Morality aside, I don't believe that twell has violated any agreement. The person(s) who made and distributed that image have, but as far as I know nothing in the various licenses I've read prohibits people from using such software in whatever way they see fit; only in distributing them inappropriately. I may be incorrect about the specifics of this as I am no lawyer, the licenses may have changed since I read them, etc. However, I think that it is clear that he's not violating the "spirit" of these licenses; they were intended to stop people from profiting from the work of others by selling the software, selling pre-hacked Tivo's, selling images, etc. Such interpretation is mine only of course, YMMV.
It is worth noting however that there is an inherent irony in this - This is a hacker / development board, much (not all) of the software and techniques developed and discussed here involve grey areas, circumventing the protections on these devices that were expressly implemented to impede such development, etc - in a word "hacks". eMule and other P2P networks are a simillar grey area. Getting up-in-arms about hacks being distributed (for free, remember) on a "hack" network is at least mildly amusing, you must agree. :)
Please do not mis-interpret my statements as a lack of appreciation for those who have developed the tools we have, or a lack of respect for their wishes.

The other discussion aside, this is a difficult question that most of the experienced people here would find difficult to do with 100% accuracy.
Start by looking in the following files and then search this Board for any of the files that are listed:
test.conf
rc.sysinit.author
Also, Look in the /var and /usr directories and any directory called hack, hacks, or hacked.
Good Luck.
