Does anyone have ant tips on purchasing a Directivo sub in Canada. I can use a friends us address and have a us phone number. I guess I just trying to find out what I need to look out for as far as how they try to detect canadian users.
I not trying to discuss HACKing, or stealing programing.

I don't want to get in trouble, but my best bet would be for you to do the following:
Subscribe w/your friends address
purchase a non-R10 DirecTivo
Load 4.x onto the unit
Among other things (read the stickies and search), install FakeCall to disable the daily calls
WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T PLUG YOUR TIVO INTO A PHONE LINE (as long as you don't plug your tivo into a phone line, they shouldn't be able to tell).
Enjoy!

Thanks for the reply compwiz312.
My two Dtivo's are series 1 (about 4 years old). I guess I am concerned about when Dtv wants the receiver to call in. I was hoping that some would have some tricks to share.
It's interesting that we can not discuss PAYING for service because we are in Canada, but it fine to discuss tools to enable a unit without a tivo sub, or burning DVDs of PPV movies (i.e. illegal copies). I agree that this forum should stay away from smart card hacking. The only ones that lose from a Dtivo sub in Canada are the ones with the lame, useless PVRs. You think they might get the message.
I am total hooked on Tivo and there is nothing in Canada that even comes close. I would subscribe in a heartbeat to any cable/sat service that offerd tivo.

I don't know why the forum has its policies, but after witnessing enough pissing maches, I know not to get involved.
Anyway, the only thing you need to do is look for fixup30.tcl (if you are running a series 1 unit). That will disable the need for any calls from your unit. You would have to order online or call DTV if you wanted PPV.
Otherwise, everything is the same. If you want to do it the "easier" way, I would recommend TivoLater (its in the stickies in the Series 1 forum).
Doing it manually is better, more fun (to computer nerds like me at least) and can be educational.

Hey,
I subbed DTV for about 3 years (back in the Hughes GXCEBOT days), until Bill C-2 threatened to make me a criminal. Needless to say, Bill C-2 never passed, but I'm happy on CDN TV now (with stand-alone TiVo). As for the legality, recent (in the fall?) court rulings in Quebec have returned us to a "grey" market. Not even the major brokers are being bothered until the constitutional challenge(s) are worked out.
In addition to the handy tips for setting up your unit (which won't be able to call home from Canada), you may want to farm out the handling of the sub to a broker. They'll setup a US identity for you, manage the account and have your CDN credit card billed directly.
PM me for recommendations of Canadian brokers for US TV.
