Approximately 1.5 years ago, after many long nights, I learned how to upgrade my Sony SVR-2000 Series 1 unit. Installed large hard drive, turbonet card, and hooked it up wirelessly to my home wireless network. Recorded many shows, movies, etc., and even learned how to use TyTools. Burned DVDs for backups.

Then, about 2-3 months ago, could no longer access TiVo from PC with TyTools or my ftp software. Have been extremely busy at work and with various family committments (not to mention travelling for funerals for elder family members), and could not dedicate any time to attempting to fix this situation.

Now, I have a little time, but cannot locate my paperwork on how I had configured the TiVo, and am not sure how to attempt to "fix" it without losing programs that we want to record with TyTools.

Would definitely approve some simply-worded guidance on how to proceed with this effort.

Not totally familiar with the Stand Alones, but I would suggest starting with the connection.

Do you know the IP address of the Tivo?
Can you Ping it?
Can you telnet into it?

If the answer to the above three questions is "yes", next step will be to start tivoftp from a telnet session.

can you telnet in to the tivo?

The IP Address is simple, since I had set the TiVo last year, and had set up my PC Wireless network myself about 2 years ago.

I cannot ping nor telnet a session into the TiVo. Have a netgear wireless bridge which connects with the wireless network to do daily calls. So the connection to the network is not an issue.

I am curious to know why you are so confident that "the connection to the network is not an issue", when you can not ping the tivo?

Do you have a serial connection to it? If not, that is your very next step.

You will be pleased to hear that I am now able to telnet to and ping my TiVo. However, I cannot communicate with it via tivowebplus anymore. That is to say, I cannot connect to it from a computer either at home or over the internet.

Based upon these changed circumnstances, do you have any suggestions as to how I can get my TiVo to communicate with my computers again? I am quite pleased that I am now able to contact the TiVo from the computer via ping and telnet, but obviously, that is not my end goal. Your help and guidance is truly appreciated. Please bear with me.

Is tivowebplus running? If not, start it manually (using telnet).

I telnetted and pinged over to the TiVo last night. With telnet, I could locate the following folders/directories:

/var
/var/bin
/var/hack

and others.

However, these folders/directories were empty when I entered an echo * command.

Do I need to completely reinstall tivoweb and other hacks? If so, can this be done wirelessly through telnet or so other utility?

Any guidance and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Yup, if that's where your hacks were, sounds like they got wiped. When the /var directory gets too full, Tivo wipes it and rebuilds it. Most folks here don't put their hacks their because of that.

If you can't pull the drive (that would probably be the easiest if you're starting from where you're starting), I would put tivoftpd on there, chmod it, launch it, then do the rest from an ftp client on a pc somewhere on your network.
