Yep. There's a nice post on /. about it too.

Someone made a nice reasoning about it too - how before one could buy a copy of some music and the producers would tend to know it was a 1:1 correllation between sold copies and copies out there (or similar). After all, the difficulty in copying an LP or something was so much more than buying another copy. Same with audio tapes and such.

Photocopier came along and music publishers opposed it (since you could make copies of sheet music). And now that digital's come along, making a copy of music is easier than going out to buy another copy. That's what the RIAA/etc want to fix by doing this (which they'll fail, hopefully) - make it more convenient to buy the music than to rip it.

Of course, given the current economic situation, what the RIAA propose is essentially killing the PC industry... (take away the tools the public has shown demand for, then essentially, you take away they're reason to purchase them).

BTW, the RIAA doesn't seem to understand that if you can't do a digital rip, there's a little thing called a patch cord....

the music industry can't win, any protection on cd's or file sharing can be undone. And if they can...what will be next: arresting me for humming a song (voice copy of a song)

what a joke. They better start making downloading cheap and fast and with out a hassle if they want to servive....

next step will be that bands and singers will skip the step to the recording industry and publish their work directly on the net. ( i give the industry another 10 years befor the evaporize)

you can't put this devil back in the box.

i think they realize something has to be done.

the whole idea of posting this was to point out that the media/entertainment industry was having SECRET MEETINGS with US lawmakers!

money, graft and lobbying may be the driving force here, not common sense. we need to stay aware of what's going on behind closed doors.

are our lawmakers for sale? i guess we'll see.......
