I'd like to tinker with a USB device connected to my TiVo Series1,
and eventually use the code on a hacked Series2 (with USB).
As long and I can build a kernel that knows about the new hardware,
I wonder if the cardbus slot on the Airnet card will accept a USB adapter?

Way back when there was only TiVoNet, the designer(s) mapped out which parts of the connector were "live" and could be used. Then (t)he(y) built a connector that you plugged a NIC card into that fit on the TiVo's motherboard connector. You might be able to start from that research if you can find it (instead of starting from scratch) and build a PCI/USB connector for that part of the motherboard. Or you could try to plug in a PCS/USB card to a TiVoNet connector (if you can find one) to see if it will be recognized (with the appropriate drivers of course) and functional. Don't know if anyone else already went down this road, but it could prove interesting if you blaze a new trail.

Ah yes... TiVoNET PCI, that would be something to test.
I was talking about using a AirNet (which has a cardbus slot),
and shove and OHCI USB cardbus card in there.
Seems like PCI would be less kernel grief then cardbus.

Oh well, looks like much more work than cracking open the SA2
