I had one of the notorious bad HDMI interface HR10-250's. D* just sent me a replacement unit. I removed the original drive and plugged in the pair of 250's from my original and the box won't boot. I get the initial Powering Up, Please Wait... onscreen and nothing more.

Anyone know why this might happen? I have the dual drive config fully hacked with no scramble, swupdate=false, tivoweb+, etc. and I'd hate to go thru all that again, not to mention losing the hours of programs I want to preserve on the hardware replacement.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The first suggestion is to post the serial console output. The second suggestion is to check the jumpers and ribbon cable.

mixelpix-

I don't think you can just move drives from one machine to another like that-the box/hardware and the drive data are 'matched'.

desplaines - you are partially correct... The software on the drives is matched to the hardware (motherboard), but it should still boot up. The initial screen you get is an Error #51, Hardware. This can be cleared using a the 51killer script and rebooting.

mixelpix's issue is that he is never getting to that stage. It is hanging on boot up.

PlainBill is correct - without more info (serial output) this is all guess work. Jumpers, power, cables - these are the first to check.

I'll be working on this more tonight but I've done a few Tivo's before and have never had a problem where I took a set of drives from one working system and placed them into the same make and model and didn't have it work. I was wondering if there was something unique to the Hr10-250.

Everything was working before I removed the whole dual drive assembly and installed it in the replacement unit. I know the drive jumpers are correct and power is getting to both drives. It looks like I'll need to make myself a console cable to get any further.

Thanks for the pointers so far.

Ah, time to be humble...

I did find the solution to the problem. I was so methodical in my testing that I created the exact same problem every time. The problem ended being the IDE cable not remaining seated properly while installing the dual drive bracket.

Since I had the bracket with both drives already mounted, there was some twisting and lifting to get everything in just the right place. As a result of that twisting and lifting, one side of the IDE cable popped up. Once I reseated the connector after tightening all the screws, everything works.

Thanks for the help and it does show that you ALWAYS need to check the basics.

Glad you found the problem...

I'm also glad that you posted the fix for it... Too often people have a problem and forget to post back once they get it fixed...
