It has been said that one doesn't want a phone line connected to a DTivo unit modified with 4.x software. Instead, make a voice call to DTV to order PPV. Given "ugradesoftware=false", what exactly could go wrong if such a unit *did* call in ? A visit from the thought police, a crackdown on hacking, or worse ?

4.x is considered an improper software level for DirecTiVos. When someone calls in with an outdated software version, the usual response from TiVo's servers is to send the correct version. While a normal call takes less than 5 minutes, a software upgrade takes more than 45 minutes. As a result, this represents a significant drain on TiVo's resources.
One call is no big deal. When dozens (or hundreds) of DirecTiVos are downloading the correct software repeatedly, it becomes a big deal. Alldeadhomiez has given hints of TiVo / DirecTVs capabilities as far as forcing a software upgrade. We DON'T want them to start doing this.

Now that DTV is rolling out 6.2 for series 2 Directivos, how soon will 3.1.1e become "improper software"?
