I just purchased a Phillips DSR6000 from CC. I plan on using emulation with this receiver. My questions is what steps should I take in order to get around the $200 fee for not subscribing. I have already updated my core with a HU bin. I have tested this in the receiver and it works. I have not hooked up the phone cord and I have reset the receiver in hopes of erasing my information from my H card.

If I have to I was planning on subscribing to Tivo and an additional receiver through DirecTv and then cancelling in the near future letting DirectTv know that I was returning the receiver. I already have a copy of 2.0 incase it updates itself to 2.5 Please let me know if there is anything else that I will need to know ?

Allright it looks like I'm going to activate the Hu card to avoid the $200 dollar fee. After it has been activated I will disconnect the phone line to prevent the update to 2.5 . My plan is to cancel this receiver in the near future and tell DirecTv that I don't like the features of the receiver and that I'm returning it to the retailer. Will this let me avoid the $200 non activation fee. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sorry about the multiple posts. I purchased my DSR6000 off Circuitcity's website. Because of this the only information they have is my name and credit card. How will they be able to find out that this receiver hasn't been activated. I know that normally they need you to fill out a form for activation but this was not done even when I picked the unit up at the store. I called DirecTv and they are not sure how the retailer is able to find out if the receiver has been activated. If anyone could please let me know if they think I will need to activate and cancel this receiver.

Thanks,

I have no idea how to circumvent signing up (what is the minimum length that you have to sign up for?) but from what I've seen at CC, they scan in the receiver serial # and/or card serial number right off the outside of the box when they ring you up which is how they collect the necessary information to tie you to a specific receiver.

The $200 activation fee comes from CC not dtv, they are selling the hardware at a discount with the assumption that they will get more money later from dtv when you subscribe (they get referral money). So if you dont subscribe (or only for a month) its CC that is screwed not dtv. CC will know if you havent subscribed (or have cancelled prematurely from what you agreed to) from dtv.

Edit: Just went to the cc site and checked out their system purchase agreement, (see below) looks like there is nothing stopping you from signing up for a month, cancelling and being free and clear of the $200 charge since they dont mention a minimum length of service.

Circuit City DIRECTV System Purchase Agreement:

"I understand and agree that Circuit City has sold me a DIRECTV System contingent upon use with a current DIRECTV account or activation of a new DIRECTV account.

I further understand and agree that if I fail to activate the DIRECTV System on a new or existing DIRECTV account within 90 days of purchase, Circuit City is authorized to charge my credit card a $200 fee for each DIRECTV System purchased.

I understand that the fee does not apply if the DIRECTV System is returned to Circuit City in new condition with all components, including the original access card, within 30 days of purchase

I agree to waive my right to sign a contract or agreement and agree that by clicking on the "I Agree" button below that the electronic agreement and order confirmation is fully enforceable.

I have read and accept the above conditions and understand my obligations under this agreement. "

Thats is all they need to get you, its hwo the whole procedure works...they hold your CC with the full charge of the unit ($300) then they charge you $99 for the unit. If unit is not regged, then they will automatically bill you for the full price of the unit...READ all paperwork you have signed, with CC, I'm sure its written somewhere is very fine print.

I called and activated the receiver today. I only avtivated DirecTv and passed on Tivo. I unplugged the phone line as soon as the card was activated in order to prevent the update to 2.5 My question is now how long would you recommend I keep this receiver activated before cancelling it in order to avoid the $200 charge.

The CC guy told me I could cancel in as little as a month. That's what I plan on doing. Did DTV they give you any problems not turning on TIVO? I want to do the same thing you did to avoid being charged the $200 but I don't want it to upgrade to 2.5.

Also, are you planning on running Fixup to get the TIVO features enabled?
