I was trying to figure out a way to modify the installSw.itcl file to alert the user (me) when a software upgrade is installed and the pending a reboot, allowing me to sneak in and get the hack stuff transferred before the I force the reboot.
Currently I have a simple command of echoing text to a file in /var, I'll have to manually check for the file, but it's aheads up so I don't have to pull the drive.
The other option I saw (and didn't investiagate yet) was osdwriter, but it looks like that won't help me.
I wasn't able to get text2osd to work, but I don't really know the secrets...
I created a 40x25 text file with the message, put that into /var
tried
text2osd /var/rebootmsg.txt
also tried variations using -fg -bg and - options, but all result in:
bdlib error code 4 at text2osdbrcm.c:86
Is this like other s2 versions and doesn't work on s2? The help says it's for "sa mips".
Not sure exactly how this will help you - isn't there a "pending reboot" message supplied by the OS? For the record, on a Series 2 you need newtext2osd-1.4 to send messages to the screen.
-s seconds
-d filename to display
-t text
Some of the other switches don't really work.
This (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=221385&postcount=17) post has some info on using the displaytext module for TivoWebPlus with newtext2osd.

I gather the objective is to give some sort of visual indication that a software upgrade is ready to install. I agree that looking for a text file is an inelegant solution; but am not sure that an on-screen message would be the best way to go.
Wouldn't the ideal approach be to send a message when the upgrade is available - "Alert!! An upgrade has been downloaded and is waiting, pending restart." That message would trigger the 'new message' marker on the channel banner. It would not interfere with normal viewing, but would be visible any time you changed channels. TiVoWeb has such a capability; I'm not running TWP at the moment, but assume it does too.

Would an email sent from the tivo work in this case, or do
you want to see the message. If you get an OSD message
set at 2am for instance... are you sure you'd see it?
