Does anyone have any idea if or when Directv will enable the usb ports on the series 2 Directivo? I have been looking around all night, and back in January, one of the Directivo support people told me June but I called again today and they played dumb of course and said they have no idea if or when they will release that update. And if they do not release it, Tivo encourages hacking their system to better their product but I'm sure Directv does not. Is it illegal to hack a Directivo versus hacking a regular tivo for things such as callerid and running a web server? Thanks in advance for the feedback.

There's no actual indication of any intention on DirecTV's part to activate the USB ports. 6.2 might have (since it has the HMO code in it), and that may be what the person you spoke with was thinking about, but DirecTV opted to release 6.2 without the HMO/MRV code active (of course, thanks to NutKase, those features have been activated for we the hacking community).

Tivo most certainly does NOT encourage hacking their product. With every update, they circumvent existing hacks intentionally. Neither, of course, does DirecTV. We here exist in a tenuous balance with the two companies by not profiting from the hacking.

6.2 has activated the USB ports in v1.1 mode.
However they have the network ports filtered so, although it will activate your ethernet dongle, no network traffic will passthrough with out hacking the Tivo.

The only "illegal" hacking of a DTV unit is to enable reception of channels/services that you aren't paying for. Hacking the Tivo-side of a D-Tivo box does nothing to enable theft of service, ergo it's "legal".

Of course you're right; I was being too glib. The ports are "active" in the sense that it receives power, but nothing will function in them.

Yes 2.0 works just fine, but you will need to hack the tivo and download the usb 2.0 modules..
