S2 upgraded drive crashes w/ white screen?

My father just got a 300gb Seagate and asked me to use it to upgrade his 40-hour S2 unit. Everything went smoothly at first, until after I did the restore and hooked everything up. After the PROM finished the initial kernel+initrd check, the TiVo crashed with a solid white screen. Various experiments led me to the following:

1. Restoring with -s 127 but without -x didn't work.
2. Restoring with -x but without -s didn't work.
3. Restoring without -s and without -x worked (but, of course, left me with a 40-hour unit, making it rather pointless.)

I tried it again with the latest version of mfstools and got similar results.

Has anyone gotten this problem in their hacking ventures who can shed some light on this situation?

Software version?
Exact TiVo model?
Backup from your image file? A downloaded one?
Are you useing a lba48 aware boot disk with mfstools?

"Didn't work". What didn't work? Were the symptoms the same in each case?
